From the Back Cover
This is the first book to give an overview of this geologically and industrially important group of minerals. The book concentrates on the minerals themselves rather than whole rock geochemistry, and presents a wide range of information - crystal structures, petrographic descriptions, analytical data and numerous illustrations from outcrop photos to SEM pictures and crystallographic models. The book starts with an expert review of the geochemical behaviour of Rare Earth elements, and an up-to-date review of Rare Earth minerals based on crystal structures and a new classification of perovskite. There is a chapter on pressure and temperature stabilities of some igneous RE minerals based on experimental work, and a chapter on RE minerals in China (with geological maps) much of which is entirely new. Subsequent chapters have been selected to illustrate the wide variety of different geological settings where RE minerals occur, from alkaline igneous rocks through hydrothermal ores and metamorphic skarns to very recent work on RE-mineralized carbonatites and laterites and bauxites. This book will be essential reading for research workers in mineralogy, geology, materials science and economic geology. It will also be a valuable source of information for third-year earth science undergraduates.

Review
Both researchers in mineralogy and economic geology and advanced undergraduate students will find much of interest in this comprehensive overview of the geochemistry of this important group of minerals. - Aslib Book Guide; ...strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in RE minerals in general and their deposits in particular; in fact, it can be regarded as essential reading. - Mineralogical Magazine

An OK book
By Dakini
The book contains quite a bit of information, but is not easy to read, due to perhaps a lack of synthesis or interesting contextual discussion. I did not read it fully, but picked it up and flipped through it a few times, not finding it too enthralling. Unlike the previous reviewer, I think it is a good thing that not much was written in this book about the history and discovery of the elements, because those subjects are always too much emphasized in all other REE articles and publications. As a worker in the Rare Earth Element mining and exploration field, I can see using the book as a handbook of info, but it did not attract my intellectual interest or respond to any of the pressing or general questions I have concerning the natural occurence of the elements. I much prefer the book by Lesnov, on REE's in mafic and ultra mafic rocks. Although it is more specialized and only covers one rock group composition, the data raises interesting thoughts and offers good information with some reasoning and good grounds for more work. There is a synthesis and scientific reasoning process in Lesnov's book that enables a reader to put it to use both in the field and in applying it to other geological research. I hesitate to spend $ 100 on this book. I would buy it for half of the price without too much difficulty.

A Good Overview of Rare Earth Minerals
By Jan Peczkis
This single volume provides a good overview of the chemistry, crustal abundances, chondrite-normalized abundances, and geochemical behavior of rare earth minerals. Color photographs are provided of important rare-earth minerals. On the other hand, very little attention is devoted to the modern-day uses of these metals. Little information is given on how the rare earth elements got discovered and now they got their names.

The high relative abundance of REE in carbonate-rich rocks is given a moderate amount of attention. After all, carbonatites tend to be enriched in REE. This is true of both primary and secondary deposits.

Several important REE--bearing sites are discussed. These include Bayan Obo, Kola Peninsula, Brazilian laterite--bearing locations, Mountain Pass, Kangankunde, etc.
