Like The Other Two In The Series

Probably the "lightest" of reads in the Horror of Philosophy trilogy, Tentacles Longer Than Night guides you through the process of reading (or misreading) horror as if it is philosophy. The book, like the other two in the series, does require an effort in reading (meaning a willingness to re-read and use a dictionary), but I found it extremely rewarding.

I thought it was unique, clever, and insightful in how it takes the ideas that inform (or are created by) horror and uses those to reflect and illuminate the struggles we humans have faced when confronting the strangeness of our existence. The highlight for me was the fourth part of the book, "Meditation on the Weird." As an aside, someone really should give Thacker an award for his skills in coming up with excellent titles.

Maybe, in summation, I can say I just loved that this book challenged me to think; I can say if you're a horror fan, enjoy media studies, philosophy, or just a good challenge this book (and series) is worth your time.

He mobilizes cultural theorists ― Baraka, Foucault, DuBois, Jameson, Said, Fanon, Hurston ― to describe the evolution of African American intellectual and cultural history via 'radical humanism, and democratic socialism.' Sprawling overviews of Africana critical theory, feminist theory, and queer theory imagine 'anti-racist, anti-capitalist, anti-colonialist, and sexual orientation-sensitive critical theory of contemporary society.' The author provides interesting, if diffuse, discussion of gay literary voices in the Harlem Renaissance in relation to the contemporary homo-hop movement; Black Arts Movement members' perception of the aesthetic radicalism of the Harlem Renaissance'; and the 'black aesthetic' sensibility that ''authentic' black art was always historically grounded, politically engaged, socially uplifting, and consciousness-raising.' About the Author
Reiland Rabaka is an associate professor of Africana studies in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he is also an affiliate professor in the Women and Gender Studies Program and a Research Fellow at the Center for Studies of Ethnicity and Race in America (CSERA). He is the author of several books, including: Du Bois's Dialectics (2008); Africana Critical Theory (2009); Forms of Fanonism (2010); and Against Epistemic Apartheid (2010). This book really helped me to become aware of areas in my life that are stressful. The recommendations for managing and/or eliminating these stress points were very helpful. In the last few days, I have read several articles on how stress causes undesirable physical conditions, so I consider this book very timely

Beating Stress

Despite the title of the book, which I thought was a textbook, this book is awesome! The book is packed with information and techniques. It is witty, and very informative about small things you can do on a daily basis to de-stress yourself. Just try the forced alternate nostril breathing technique. It really will calm you down. Throughout the book there are numerous techniques that can be used in the comfort of your home or office. You literally don't have to move the furniture, just sit in your favorite chair and do the relaxation techniques. This book will really help reduce your stress levels.

In her book she does an amazing job at showing biologically why we're stressed, and more importantly, what we can do about it. She looks at all aspects of beating stress, leaving no stone unturned. And she shares an incredible wealth of information on nutrition, I didn't even expect to find in this book, and how we can use nutrition to beat stress. I love it!

If you're feeling stressed (and who isn't these days) or simply want to feel more empowered about the state of your emotional and physical well-being, then you will love this book!!!

Beneath the Jungle's boughs

What an amazing treatise on an ancient civilization. We're only recently learning more about the ancient people of Mexico and South America, but with the deciphering of the Mayan language (beautiful glyphs, to say the least) we're able to peak into the lives of the people who came before us on these two great continents: North and South America.

This book, partnered with Maya Cosmos by David A. Freidel, will add an intellectual, archeologically informative flair to your library. Besides, isn't it better to be able to grasp the true breadth of our history as mankind over the simplicity of current monotheistic religions?

Comprehensive, readable and authoritative!

When I was first introduced to "A Forest of Kings" by Linda Schele and David Freidel, I was, frankly, a bit suspicious. Another book on the Maya by a couple of well-meaning outsiders focusing on bloodletting and the mysterious ballcourts? I was surprised to find this book to be scholarly, highly readable and not goulishly focused on the bloodier aspects of this ancient culture. Their deft translation of Mayan pictographs and symbolism is very well done. The book is loaded with black and white line drawings of carvings and inscriptions with translations along side. There are detailed explanations of Mayan cosmology and an explanation of the calendar reputed to be the most accurate ever invented. It also includes extensive notes for each chapter. I don't know how else they could have been handled, but reading "A Forest of Kings" involved having several book marks at once, so I could read the notes, refer back to other illustrations and photos and keep my place in the text. Over all, it's fascinating reading for an amatuer who's fascinated with the Maya. I only wish I'd had this book when I visited the Yucatan!

Superlative book on Mayan culture - fascinating read

It is so sad that we have lost Linda Schele. But we can rejoice that we still have her wonderful books. This book is among her best. It is almost magical in the way she and David Freidel create the atmosphere of the Mayan culture. There are wonderful pictures and illustrations. She unfolds the stories of the archaeological discoveries and then helps us understand the real lives revealed in the evidence.

The book also shows how the Mayan glyphs and counting systems work. There are nowadays very good texts on the writing system itself, but this book shows us how the glyphs are woven into the culture and religion of these people. We learn how the lineage worked and how the monuments were used as what we would call propaganda to support one line over other possibilities. We learn about the role of magic and visions and the way the leaders were the empowered by those visions.

There is just so much here that any reader will be richly rewarded. The Mayan civilization is incredibly fascinating because it is so foreign to our own and yet it is a part of the heritage of the American continents.

This book isn't just a text, it is a work of art in itself. You will have a hard time putting it down.
