About the Author
In 1934, when J. Edgar Hoover decided to get some publicity for his newly named organization, the FBI, he created a list of “Public Enemies”. One by one, the FBI hunted down and killed these “Public Enemies”. The most famous was John Dillinger, who was killed on July 22, 1934 by the FBI after having been fingered by his girlfriend, “The Lady in Red”, as part of a deal to save her from deportation. All of these “Public Enemies” were gunned down and killed by the FBI, until only Alvin Karpis was left. Those killed were John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson. This left Alvin Karpis as “Public Enemy Number One”. Meanwhile, J., Edgar Hoover was under increasing pressure from the United States Congress. It was pointed out that Hoover had never in his life conducted an investigation or made an arrest. Therefore, Hoover decided that he personally would arrest Karpis, to improve his image. Karpis was located in New Orleans and J. Edgar Hoover and his trusty assistant Clyde Tolson flew down on May 1, 1936 to arrest him.

i took the St Paul "gangster tour" while passing through minnesota... figured i'd check out the autobiography of Creepy Karpis... i dont have much time for reading but i couldnt put this book down... read it in 2 sittings and immediately ordered his book about his decades in alcatraz... its like a train wreck that you cant look away from...

BEST NON FICTION I HAVE EVER READ

I read just about everything I could find about Depression Era Gangsters. Alvin's other book "On The Rock" was spellbinding. Life on Alcatraz for 25+ Years was Brutal to say the least. Probably over twice the time Capone put in. I know Alvin was a Gangster, but Hoover had it in for him, and made no secret about it. Anyway, back to this book, "The Alvin Karpis Story" The Most Exciting Non Fiction book I've ever run across. The inside story of The Karpis-Barker Gang. Finding out that Ma Barker was mainly a Decoy, and had nothing to do with crime planning, and not involved in the commission of crimes.Read this, make your own conclusions,from everything I've ever read that old lady was massacred in an effort to get Doc and Alvin.Just my opinion. Alvin had not a lot to gain by not telling it the "Way It Was"by the time this was heading towards print form. I bought a copy of this a few years ago for $75 before the reprints started showing up, and I am glad I got it when I did. Im going to get a "fresh one" as mine, while complete, fell apart in my hands while I was reading it. For anyone interested in Depression era Crime, This is at the Top of the Heap.The Scores He Pulled off! Also check out "On The Rock", Im seeing copies as low as 99 cents at Amazon. A fascinating read from start to finish. Alvin Karpis was the real thing: He robbed banks; kidnapped a few people and even robbed a train. He was J. Edgar Hoover's public enemy number one and was not expected to live through his arrest. He was also a genious who assembled and managed criminal teams and thought through every detail in advance. He also knew most of the crime community in the 30's. He worked with the Barker Gang a lot. "Ma Barker" wasn't a criminal at all until the FBI killed her in an ambush. His story couldn't happen in modern society where we are tracked,photographed and recorded in just about everything we do to provide for our security.
