George vs. George: The American Revolution As Seen from Both Sides, by Rosalyn Schanzer

There are two sides to every story. Rosalyn Schanzer's engaging and wonderfully illustrated book brings to life both sides of the American Revolution.

The narrative introduces anew the two enemies, both named George: George Washington, the man who freed the American colonies from the British, and George III, the British king who lost them. Two leaders on different sides of the Atlantic, yet with more in common than we sometimes acknowledge. We are lead through their story, and the story of their times, and see both sides of the arguments that divided the colonies from the Kingdom. Was King George a "Royal Brute" as American patriots claimed? Or was he, as others believed, "the father of the people?" Was George Washington a scurrilous traitor, as all the king's supporters claimed? Or should we remember and celebrate him as "the father of his country?" Who was right? History teaches us that there are two sides to every story.

Rosalyn Schanzer's book is an accessible account of one the most vital periods in American history. It is also a timeless lesson in seeing history from different points of view. The author spent two years researching books, paintings, cartoons, and descriptions of Revolutionary times. She uses art, text, and first-hand accounts to illustrate how history should never be reduced to simplistic conflicts between the "good guys" and the "bad guys." Her illustrations, and her engaging quote bubbles, bring the Revolution to life again, and allow the characters of the period to speak for themselves. Through its lively text, detailed illustrations, and fully authenticated quotes, George vs. George shines fresh light on both sides of the story of our country's formative years.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 3-6–A carefully researched, evenhanded narrative with well-crafted, vibrant, watercolor illustrations. Schanzer states that her challenge was to "…cram 20 years of history, biography, and philosophy into a picture book that kids could grasp and enjoy." She has been entirely successful. The introduction sets the tone, introducing both George Washington and King George III, mentioning their differing views, and noting that every story has two sides. The remainder of the book presents these two sides on spreads that alternate between the man and the monarch, with comparisons of the American and British governmental forms, views on taxation, the Boston Tea Party, and coverage of most of the major battles of the Revolutionary War. True to the author's intent, both Georges come off as decent men, with the interests of their respective countries at heart. The illustrations are amazing. Almost Brueghelesque in their detail, they show the major players as they actually looked. Speech balloons reproduce the exact words of the speakers, with appended "Quote Sources." This is a lovely book, showing historical inquiry at its best: consideration of both sides, a sound research basis, attribution of sources, and interesting writing. Written at a higher level than Jean Fritz's Can't You Make Them Behave, King George? (Putnam, 1977), this book provides the perfect meld of instructional tool and general-interest reading.–Ann Welton, Grant Elementary School, Tacoma, WA

From Booklist
Gr. 5-7. With its attractive jacket, its sustained effort to report both British and American points of view, and its fully illustrated overview of events, this colorful book has many qualities that make it a good introduction to the American Revolution. Schanzer lays the groundwork well, profiling England's King George III, America's George Washington, and their respective governments before chronicling the course of the Revolutionary War. Occasionally cartoonlike in their dramatizations and speech balloons, the lively illustrations take up more space than the words, but the text is clearly written. However, near the end the question is asked, "So what was happening to American civilians all this time?" The answer seems to be mayhem: people were tarred and feathered, women raped. Indians "tortured . . . whole families, and scalped the dead" and "honored their bravest victims by eating them." The American troops "showed off pairs of legging made from the skin of dead Indians." Given the book's highly illustrated format, this is too sensationalized for the age group, a jarring note in an otherwise solid offering. Carolyn Phelan

This is a great book for the American Revolution!
By amsynicole
This book is great! We are using it for our fourth grade homeschooling with our American Revolution unit. I am a judge a book by its cover girl and I was immediately drawn to this book! It gives an introduction to both George Washington and King George and then goes through several small chapters, 1. at first glance 2. a look at the life of King George and his countrymen, 3. a look at the life of George Washington and his countrymen, 4. how government worked in England 5. How government works in America, 6. The trouble with taxes, 7. The tempest over tea, 8. George versus George, 9. The shot heard round the world, 10. British forces, 11. Rebel forces, 12. A new nation, 13. The tides of war, 14. The final battle, 15. No kings for America 16. Whatever happened to King George the third 17. What did George Washington do next. Most of these little chapters are about 4 Pages long with half of each page being a picture so really easy for your child to read alone or for you to read out loud in little sections there is one section the tides of war that is several pages long without as much picture. The pictures are really bright and colorful and are fun to look at and my son enjoy those just as much as he enjoyed the reading of the actual book it gives a lot of information without being boring and kind of sums it up really well ! I would highly recommend this book for anyone talking about the American Revolution!!

Great book

Again a great book for children old enough to read well. It tells a non-biased version of history from both the colonial and the British points of view. Adults may actually enjoy it too.

Excellent 5th Grade Resource
By moldynorthwester
I especially value this book as part of my Social Studies Colonial Boston Independence Unit, because it contains an extremely clear explanation on comparing/contrasting Britain's Government with the Colonies' Government, both under King George III. I was having difficulty finding information on this exact topic. There are other compare/contrast structures throughout the book that are also invaluable. The headings guide you well and guard you well from going further in a read-aloud than you may want to, so as to not spoil a future event! I used the book for clarification of concepts we had learned about on the previous day, because the book is so well laid-out.

Philosophy for Life and Other Dangerous Situations: Ancient Philosophy for Modern Problems, by Jules Evans

When philosophy rescued him from an emotional crisis, Jules Evans became fascinated by how ideas invented over two thousand years ago can help us today. He interviewed soldiers, psychologists, gangsters, astronauts, and anarchists and discovered the ways that people are using philosophy now to build better lives. Ancient philosophy has inspired modern communities — Socratic cafés, Stoic armies, Epicurean communes — and even whole nations in the quest for the good life.

This book is an invitation to a dream school with a rowdy faculty that includes twelve of the greatest philosophers from the ancient world, sharing their lessons on happiness, resilience, and much more. Lively and inspiring, this is philosophy for the street, for the workplace, for the battlefield, for love, for life.

Enduring insights from the ancient ones, still applicable for the eternal dilemmas of human existence
By GirlScoutDad
This book rates high for both an engaging, easy writing style, and serious content of some depth. As the Epicureans (if not the Hedonists) might have noted with approval, it was a pleasure to read. The pantheon of ancient western philosophers have provided a wide range of enduring insights that we contemporary mortals should incorporate into our lives in order to live better and wiser. Some of the many ideas put forth are the following (with, in most cases, a separate chapter for explicating the concept):

-- from Epictetus: the importance of distinguishing between what is and is not under our control in life.

-- from the Stoics: the importance of physical and mental training and discipline.

-- from Epicurus, the importance of savoring the moment, and simplifying one's wants and needs.

-- from Heraclitus, the idea of 'cosmic contemplation', seeing the big picture, taking the long view of things.

-- from Pythagoras, the value of mottos, maxims, and their applicability as a kind of "psychological first aid kit."

-- from the Skeptics, the skill of cultivating a healthy doubt, and avoiding dogma, hero-worship, and over-reaction.

-- from Diogenes, tolerating and celebrating creative anarchy.

-- from Plato, the folly of Utopian schemes.

-- from Plutarch, cultivating heroic (resilient) role models.

-- from Aristotle, the cultivation of character through the practice of virtue; the definition of the good life and the art of flourishing.

-- from Socrates and others, courage and celebration in meeting the end of one's life.

The author has done considerable travel and research to search out many places around the globe and on the web where "ordinary" people are actively discussing philosophical ideas and striving to employ these concepts toward the betterment of self and community. I enjoyed William Irvine's book, "A Guide to the Good Life", on modern applications of the ancient Stoics a great deal; this book is even more satisfying because it discusses many classical schools of philosophy in addition to Stoicism.

Thousands of years of philosophy made deeply understandable
By JKO
Evans does a wonderful job of explaining many different philosophical ideas from ancient Stoicism to modern Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and shows how they are relevant today. He's clearly at the forefront of the philosophical revival and folds in the latest thinking about cognitive neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, and modern philosophy to show how ancient concepts are still relevant today and how they can improve your understanding of the world and your quality of life.

This is the first book I've ever read twice in a row. As soon as I finished it, I started over and still got a lot out of it the second time through. There are not many books you can say that about! I found myself wishing the book was twice as long because the topics are so fresh and interesting. I was disappointed when I reached a chapter end because each section was so enjoyable to read and then contemplate.

I hope there is a follow-up book coming soon.

Hope he writes another one soon!
By M.Ely
This is my first review ever on Amazon, but I felt compelled to write because I enjoyed this book so much. Evans has really succeeded in presenting ancient philosophy as something accessible and useful to us all. Philosophy has this stuffy, pompous connotation to it, but after reading this book I felt as if a whole different world had opened right before me. As a business major, I consider this the philosophy class I never had. Evans also has a fairly positive attitude about humans and our ability to be resilient and change ourselves, which I found personally uplifting. Overall, an educational, inspiring book that I will refer back to for years to come. Hope he writes another one soon!

Make Trouble, by John Waters

From an icon of popular culture, hereis inspiring advice for artists, graduates, and all who seek happiness and success on their own terms.

So what if you have talent? Then what?

When John Waters delivered his gleefully subversive advice to the graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design, the speech went viral, in part because it was so brilliantly on point about making a living as a creative person. Now we can all enjoy his sly wisdom in a manifesto that reminds us, no matter what field we choose, to embrace chaos, be nosy, and outrage our critics.

Anyone embarking on a creative path, he tells us, would do well to realize that pragmatism and discipline are as important as talent and that rejection is nothing to fear. Waters advises young people to eavesdrop, listen to their enemies, and horrify us with new ideas. In other words, MAKE TROUBLE!

Illustrated with slightly demented linedrawings by Eric Hanson, Make Trouble is a one-of-a-kind gift, the perfect playbook for gaming the system by making the system work for you.

Review
“Make Trouble, adapted from his speech to the Rhode Island School of Design class of 2015, is a commencement address I consumed with joy, will likely read again and would be happy to give to young people —especially brooding, complicated young people. (Yes, you.) Its pleasures are enhanced by playful typography and droll, sketchy illustrations by Eric Hanson, including several delightful ones of Waters, a pencil-thin man with a pencil-thin mustache. Like "Hairspray," "Make Trouble" fulfills its genreexpectations while also gloriously subverting them. Waters gives inspiring advice…”
─ Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“…simultaneously witty and inspirational, has the potential to top the best commencement speeches of all time. … a great read. With simple, imaginative illustrations, it inspires alloutsiders who strive to change society one brushstroke, word or shot at a time.”
─The Tufts Daily

“John Waters is the master of screwing things up beautifully, particularly alongside introspective doodles by Eric Hansonthat accompany most of the book’s pages.. It’s thoughtfully considered, yet maintains some of Waters’ signature well-intentioned belligerence. Some of the pages are shocking or thought-provoking in their layout; Some of the accompanying images are contemplative while others are hilarious. Ultimately, Make Trouble leaves me wondering what to expect next from Waters. He is the modern day Oscar Wilde, but this book is by no means his De Profundis. It’s more of a reminder that he’s still out there, still thinking and creating, ready to — as he calls it — prepare a sneak attack on society. In a lot of ways, the book feels like his most intensely personal work yet. It’s nice to think that these words are aimed at students graduating college, but really they reflect Waters’ manifesto. The speech is timeless and could be taken from any point in his career, but it’s a reminder that he’s not done with us. With the massive social changes going on today, his words are poignant now more than ever.”
─ Johns Hopkins News-Letter

“…as funny as it is inspiring. Make Trouble is an injection of weirdness, joy, and provocation right into your brain.”
─ San Francisco Book Review

WOW! Un libro que todo empresario DEBE leer!!!!
By Amazon Customer
BOOM BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greek City Walls of the Archaic Period, 900-480 BC (Oxford Monographs on Classical Archaeology), by Rune Frederiksen

In this fully illustrated study, Rune Frederiksen assembles all archaeological and written sources for city walls in the ancient Greek world, and argues that widespread fortification of settlements and towns, usually considered to date from the Classical period, in fact took place much earlier. Frederiksen discusses the types of fortified settlement and the topography of urban fortification, and also the preservation of structures from early settlements. He also presents an architectural history of Greek fortification walls before the Classical period, and makes the intriguing observation that early monumental architecture developed just as much in fortifications as it did in early temples. This underlines the importance of the secular sphere for the development of early communities across the Greek world.

Cliffhanger.
By sid1gen
War is changing in Forstchen's world. Good! This sort of war without prisoners, without mercy, a war of total anihilation, gets to be a little more modern still by the end of "Terrible Swift Sword." Keane will make a decision that will buy his Republic time at the price of tens of thousands of lives. The enemy will also understand that things cannot go back to be the way they were before the Yankees arrived. "Terrible Swift Sword" moves fast, like all the other noves in the series, and is an absolute cliffhanger. Again the Cartha are trapped (part their fault, part fate) between mortal enemies who will use them mercilessly to gain advantage. And Muzta of the Tugars will become one of the most interesting aliens ever. The Republic hangs from a thread. The folly of its leaders is balanced by their intelligence during the worst of times. One of the best things about this series is that, in spite of showing humans as the "good" guys, the author presents many of our species as what we are so good at producing: murderous, selfish, cowardly men who have a tough time accepting responsibility for freedom. This book prepares the way for an epic fourth installment of scorched earth. Excellent.

Fun Science Fiction War Story
By A Customer
The Merki, evil creatures of the Horde (or Chosen People), are invading the nation of Rus. It is up to Colonel Andrew Keane of the Union's 35th Maine to lead his troops into battle and defend his new country. The Merki are enemies who consider human beings to be nothing more than cattle and/or pets, they must wipe out Keane and his Union soldiers. Interestingly enough, the Merki are also fighting for their way of life. As twisted as it seems, you almost feel sorry for them, if the Merki were a little less gruesome you could come to admire their culture. However, the Merki dine on human flesh and perform weird ritualistic murder/torture on their human cattle. In order to defeat the Merki, Colonel Keane must drag Rus into a mechanized 19th century industrial society. To make matters worse the Merki create their own invention, a dirigible like balloon. This leaves the humans behind the technological curve because the Merki's airforce can perform airborne reconnaissance and aerial bombing raids. One of the best chapters in the book revolves around the invention of the balloon by the human population. Forstchen adds a lot of interesting ideas to the war.
"Terrible Swift Sword" by William R. Forstchen is a neat blend of science fiction, fantasy and historical fiction. It is the 3rd installment of "The Lost Regiment" series. Forstchen is a good writer and I like his style. The story has a quick pace and the author uses snappy dialog to keep the plot moving. So far I enjoy the series and I recommend the books to readers that enjoy some science fiction mixed with historical fiction. My only criticism is that in "Rally Cry", the first "Lost Regiment" installment, Forstchen included a map which helped me visualize the battle field, however, here no map is included.

"Once more unto the breach" but has time finally run out?
By A Customer
The roar of cannons blazes across a battlefield strewn with the smoking wreck of two mortal enemies. Armies grapple in a deadly war for survival. The resounding clash of arms once again explodes across the nighmare world of Valennia as the proud but fragile Republic of the Rus, now firmly in league with the Roum Alliance and thousands of Cartha that have managed to escape death under the Merki occupation, fight in a brave but deperate war against immeasurable odds. Having failed in their attempt to passify the Rus through the manipulation of the traitor, Cromwell, the Merki are now forced to press an uneasy truce with their rivals in order to pursue an invasion of the renegade humans and crush them once and for all. "Terrible Swift Sword" matches the previous books in the series in all its fiery intensity and spectacular glory; the continuation of a chronicle of a world at war, of a people allied against tyranny, and of a cause fighting to stay alive.

Dereliction of Duty : Johnson, McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam, by H. R. McMaster

"The war in Vietnam was not lost in the field, nor was it lost on the front pages of the New York Times or the college campuses. It was lost in Washington, D.C."
—H. R. McMaster (from the Conclusion)

Dereliction Of Duty is a stunning analysis of how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia. Fully and convincingly researched, based on transcripts and personal accounts of crucial meetings, confrontations and decisions, it is the only book that fully re-creates what happened and why. McMaster pinpoints the policies and decisions that got the United States into the morass and reveals who made these decisions and the motives behind them, disproving the published theories of other historians and excuses of the participants.

A page-turning narrative, Dereliction Of Duty focuses on a fascinating cast of characters: President Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, General Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy and other top aides who deliberately deceived the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the U.S. Congress and the American public.

McMaster’s only book, Dereliction of Duty is an explosive and authoritative new look at the controversy concerning the United States involvement in Vietnam.

Amazon.com Review
For years the popular myth surrounding the Vietnam War was that the Joint Chiefs of Staff knew what it would take to win but were consistently thwarted or ignored by the politicians in power. Now H. R. McMaster shatters this and other misconceptions about the military and Vietnam in Dereliction of Duty. Himself a West Point graduate, McMaster painstakingly waded through every memo and report concerning Vietnam from every meeting of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to build a comprehensive picture of a house divided against itself: a president and his coterie of advisors obsessed with keeping Vietnam from becoming a political issue versus the Joint Chiefs themselves, mired in interservice rivalries and unable to reach any unified goals or conclusions about the country's conduct in the war.

McMaster stresses two elements in his discussion of America's failure in Vietnam: the hubris of Johnson and his advisors and the weakness of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dereliction of Duty provides both a thorough exploration of the military's role in determining Vietnam policy and a telling portrait of the men most responsible.

From Booklist
The "error not of values and intentions but of judgment and capabilities" to which Robert McNamara admitted in In Retrospect (1995) leaves out his deceptions that helped plunge America into the Vietnam War. McNamara may not have remembered them in his memoir, but army officer McMaster found them in the Joint Chiefs of Staff's archives for the crucial decision-making years of 1964 and 1965. Distilled to its essence, McMaster's thesis proposes that the plans and advice on Vietnam prepared by the nation's military advisers were systematically sidetracked by McNamara. Two facts exemplify the whole dense forest of facts McMaster explores: the prediction of the Joint Chiefs of the Army and Marine Corps that "victory" would require five years and 500,000 troops only reached LBJ's ears once (he didn't listen, obviously), and the Pentagon war games of McNamara's theory of "graduated pressure" eerily ended in stalemate. McNamara suppressed all such warning signs, theorizes McMaster, because he was responding to LBJ's anxiety to keep Vietnam's "noise level" down until the 1964 election was over and the Great Society safely enacted. As damning of the civilian leaders as he is, McMaster doesn't blithely exonerate the brass. They didn't heed their own warnings and acquiesced in McNamara's incrementalist policy, in the hope of eventually getting the huge force they diffidently advised would be needed to win. Writing about an ocean of memos, meetings, and reports as he does, McMasters delivers a narrative more diligent than dramatic, but his take on pinpointing the architect(s) of the Vietnam fiasco should prove, nonetheless, of high interest. From Kirkus Reviews
An intriguing analysis that challenges the view that Cold War anticommunism was primarily responsible for American military intervention in Vietnam. In his first book, McMaster, a US Army major and Persian Gulf war veteran, and a historian who has taught at West Point, zeroes in on the actions of Lyndon Johnson and his top advisers from the time LBJ became president in November 1963 to the July 1965 decision to escalate the war drastically. The author makes a convincing case that domestic political considerations were behind the development of the failed strategy of graduated military pressure. The actions of Johnson, his top civilian advisers, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) were, moreover, characterized by ``arrogance, weakness [and] lying in the pursuit of self interest.'' President Johnson heads McMaster's culpability list, which also includes Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara, Secretary of State Dean Rusk, JCS head and US ambassador to South Vietnam Gen. Maxwell Taylor, Taylor's JCS successor, Gen. Earle Wheeler, and top advisers William and McGeorge Bundy. McMaster's touchstone is the unchallenged fact that Johnson wanted to fight the war on poverty, not the war in Vietnam. McMaster interprets virtually all of LBJ's actions as chief executive in that light. From November 1963 to November 1964 Johnson's overarching goal was to win the presidential election. After that, his main concern was enacting his Great Society programs. The fact that Johnson made Vietnam policy based on domestic-policy implications, McMaster believes, was a recipe for disaster in Vietnam. David Halberstam promulgated similar arguments in The Best and the Brightest (1972). McMaster, using newly released transcripts and other primary source material, pays more attention to the JCS's role. Unsparing in his analysis of the chiefs, McMaster takes them severely to task for their ``failure'' to provide LBJ with ``their best advice.'' A relentless, stinging indictment of the usual Johnson administration Vietnam War suspects. (illustrations, not seen) -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A must read if you served in Vietnam.

Outstanding book. I served in Vietnam and thought I knew a lot about the politics of the war. After reading this book I now have a much better understanding. No blood and guts or description of the battles. Just the politics.

White House Intrigue
By Richard C. Geschke
The makings of the Vietnam War upon serious study and retrospect will make one want to scream. How our White House under the leadership of Lyndon Baines Johnson gradually and without the advice of the Joint Chiefs of Staff got involved in a land war in Vietnam.
In a period of two years of constant arguing and intrigue the United States found itself hopelessly entangled in a war. Much of the military leaders advised against getting involved in the war. The only White House official who argued against military involvement was George Ball who did not bring his dissent outside the walls of the White House.
H.R. McMaster brings forth the wrong thinking and mistake prone analysis of President Johnson and Robert McNamara who stumbled their way in making a full military commitment. In doing so in a stealthy way and lying to the American public they found themselves fully immersed in a political civil war in which we could not win.

A history of twisted thought and the Coppola Four-Star Clowns
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
For those of age during the Vietnam war, there is no doubt that objectivity is difficult as to why America got involved and eventually pulled out. The view of those who fought the war is usually quite different from those who instigated it and were responsible for its disastrous outcome. It takes courage to go into battle and fight for a cause that through the detestable bureaucratic legislation called the draft one is forced to fight for. It takes just as much courage to voluntarily fight in a war that has been marketed as being necessary, unavoidable, and winnable. This book gives further evidence that the disaster of the Vietnam war was not the result of those who fought it, but rather with the DC clowns who feigned competence in military matters and those who remained silent or acquiesced in the horrible circus of political maneuvering.

There are some who may hold to the premise that Lyndon Johnson and his closest advisors showed real guts in attempting to fight against the Vietnamese Communist threat and to “save American face”. But it does not take any intestinal fortitude or keen intellect to indulge in the deceit and verbal machinations that are delineated in meticulous detail in this book. For those readers who want the raw, naked truth about Vietnam, this book is highly recommended, and its study will reveal that the author has definitely done his homework.

Having its origin in the National Security Act of 1947, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) during the Vietnam war is portrayed in this book as more of a collection of “technicians for planners” than a body of individuals who carefully thought out strategies and tactics. Some readers may be shocked as to what little influence the JCS had on actual policy decisions during the buildup of the war and its actual execution in the years that followed. One can only wonder whether this was the result of tacit agreement with those policies or rather from an excess of veneration for the Presidency and his cabinet officers. The author seems to argue for a superposition of both of these, and frequently the JCS is accused of placating the president.

Robert McNamara is rightfully portrayed as an evil demon in this book, as a government bureaucrat who cannot engage in self-criticism and smug in the certainty of his analysis and assessments of progress in the war. McNamara’s dwelling at the time was definitely a cesspool of apodictic certainty as is well brought out in this book, especially in the manner in which he interacted with the president and the JCS.

Johnson failed along with his vision of the Great Society. The JCS failed. Robert McNamara and Cyrus Vance failed. The only success of that time was the drive to end the debacle of the Vietnam war. This book is a microscopic view of these failures, and the biggest lesson to take away from the study of this book is an appreciation of just how removed from reality a government bureaucracy can be, and how uncritical adulation for a president or an idea can result in horrible destruction and heartache.
