This Gun for Hire / The Confidential Agent / The Ministry of Fear

These three adventure novels were all filmed by Hollywood in the 1940s. These stories are similar to the Eric Ambler novels where an ordinary person gets caught up in government intrigue but manages to survive. While fictional, there is a moral lesson to these stories. Their settings reflect the European politics of the 1930s. You can watch Greene's progress as a writer.

"This Gun For Hire" is about a killer hired to bump off an old politician. The corporation that hired him paid this gunman with money that was stolen; if caught he would be guilty of a robbery. This gunman resolves to take revenge on those who double-crossed him, and does. It is an adventure novel that recalls Continental politics of that time.

"The Confidential Agent" is about a middle-aged politician sent to England to buy coal supplies for his government; or to prevent them from being acquired by the other side in their civil war. D. fails in the first, but succeeds in the second by sheer luck. We get a glimpse of corporate politics behind the scenes. D. escapes England in an unbelievable ending.

"The Ministry of Fear" is about a middle-aged man just released from a sanitarium. By luck he acquires a home-made cake made from fresh ingredients (war time rationing). But this gets him involved in a spy-ring operating in London as part of the "Free Mothers" charity organization. Bombings, committal to another sanatorium, and an escape to find Scotland Yard (they don't think he is crazy). They catch the spies before the secret microfilm leaves the country. [This novel gets bogged down by too much psychological prattle. The film was much better.] The Ministry of Fear refers to the way secret services can blackmail people into doing what they want because of hidden scandals in their past.

Entertaining and Wise Discussion of Male Friendships

BUDDY SYSTEM is a new book by Dr. Greif that combines his trademark: hundreds of personal interviews with scholarly observations, a book that anyone can understand and enjoy and from which anyone can profit. He writes in a "consumer friendly " manner, full of anecdotes, stories, witty asides and sound practical advice for readers of all ages, races, religions and persuasions. I saw myself and my friends on many pages of the book, and so will any reader. It is a great primer on making and keeping friends, identifying the kinds of friends you have("just", "rust", "trust" and "must"),comprehending the role of your spouse in your friendships, and avoiding losing your friends as time and distance play their tricks. And it is FUN to read!

The book reads more like a grad school dissertation, tediously rehashing study data, than a book designed to help men build friendships. It "preaches to the choir" the benefits of having friendships, but saves little space for recommendations on actually accomplishing this. I think this book misses the mark on its intended audience.

Really good beginner book

This book provides a great history/background of pow wow in the first section. The second section focuses on the operation itself. This book is one of a kind and a must read for anyone who wants to learn about or practice the art of braucherei. The author assumes the reader has no background or experience and explains everything in layman's terms.

On a side note I found it pretty neat that the author devoted several paragraphs to informing the reader about the Rehmeyer's Hollow Hex Murder which took place in 1929 in Winterstown (in York County, PA) just a few miles from Red Lion where I live. It's a very interesting story and I would recommend anyone interested read "Hex" by Arthur Lewis. Used copies of "Hex" are relatively easy to find on Amazon and Ebay, etc.

Pennsylvanian healing

Bilardi ably explores the subject of German Braucherei from the point of view of a practitioner who is a committed Christian rather than a neopagan. While acknowledging the pagan and Kabbalistic sources of some of the charms, he emphasizes the profound Christianity of the actual praxis. Both entertaining and scholarly.

Not Bad

I bought this book eagerly anticipating a new work on Pow Wow and the Folk Practices of the Pennsylvania Dutch. The author provides that and more with his writing but it comes off a little to scholarly for my taste. The book reads more like a text book than the words of an actual Pow Wow doctor.

The real reason I gave this book three stars is not the author's fault however, its the shotty editing and printing of Pendraig Publishing. With the exception of Robin Artisson's The Horn of Evenwood, every Pendraig book I have purchased has had typos in it. Also, the illustrations in this book are terribly pixilated and look unprofessional.

The author himself deserves a higher rating and his book is a valuable contribution to the Pow Wow Community.

  About the Author
  

  Evelyne de Leeuw, PhD,�has worked and studied in universities in The Netherlands, the USA, El Salvador, Canada, Denmark and Australia. She holds degrees from Maastricht University and the University of California at Berkeley. Her PhD (1989) investigated the feasibility of developing and implementing Healthy Public Policy at the national level, and analysing that this is virtually impossible she found that whole-of-government health (policy) approaches would be more easily achieved at the local level – hence a commitment to Healthy Cities since the mid-1980s. Her quest for the development and application of health political science was side-lined routinely – by being elected Secretary-General of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region ASPHER (1992-1998), Editor-in-Chief of Health Promotion International (since 2010), foundation director of health promotion research and public health teaching institutions (Syddansk Universitet, 2000-2005, Deakin University 2008-2013), and recreational writing outings. Currently she enjoys being professor and director of the Centre for Health Equity Training Research and Evaluation (CHETRE), based at the University of New South Wales, SouthWestern Sydney Local Health District, and the Ingham Institute.

  Jean Simos, PhD, became, after his doctorate thesis, Head of a research group on environmental assessment at the Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland. From 1992 to 2000 he worked as scientific advisor for the Directorate of Public Health, Geneva, Switzerland, and from 2000 to 2007 he became its Deputy Director, in charge of environmental health and health promotion. Since 2007, he is Head of the research group on environmental health, Institute of Global Health, University of Geneva. He was involved in the WHO Healthy Cities European Network from 1994 to 2007 as a local coordinator and since 2009 as a WHO advisor. He is also president of the WHO Collaborating Centre for francophone Healthy Cities, Rennes, France. He took on several missions around the world for WHO, World Bank and Swiss Development & Cooperation Agency as an environmental health expert, particularly in link with health promotion, Healthy Cities, health impact assessment, and multiple criteria decision aid (ELECTRE methods). He is invited professor at the University of Liege, Belgium, since 2011, was invited lecturer in University Paris-Dauphine in 2015, and he is a member of the High Council for Public Health, France, since 2011.

The best treatment of life in the Spirit I have read

Rob Reimer's book, in my personal opinion, is the best book on life in the Spirit available.

Rob addresses the issues with care and grace, which enables him to shed light that has long been needed on this vital subject for the church of our time. And as he notes, unless we get this right, the church in our time will continue to decline and lose influence.

Life in the Spirit has been much misunderstood and, as a result, misappropriated as a central truth of the Word and our Lord Jesus.

Buy this book and study it carefully. Read it slowly. Put it into practice to the benefit of your soul!

Captivating

This is one of those books that you don't ever want to lend out let alone give away but would GLADLY purchase for someone. From the beginning pages I was drawn to the anointed words penned by Dr. Reimer. His personal experiences gave the book depth and weight. He inspires you to go deeper and deeper with the One who created you. It is easily written and offers questions at the end of each chapter to make you think and apply. I will read this book again and again as I continue dwelling in the River. Keep writing Dr Reimer!!!

Just as with his first book, Pathways to the King, I am having a hard time putting this book down! The author knows how to Biblically teach how to live in the power of the Holy Spirit. Looking forward to more books.
