Find a style and stick to it
By Christopher Richards
Any style guide’s purpose is to make writing understandable—with the possible exception of academic writing. Style Guide by The Economist offers sound advice for business writers, particularly for people writing articles.

Catch the attention of the reader and then get straight into the article. Do not spend several sentences clearing your throat.
Readers are interested in what you have to say. The way you say it will cause them to read on or give up.
Introduce facts as you tell the story.
Don’t tell readers what they should think, persuade them.

American business writers can learn much from this short book—despite its emphasis on British English.

This book is organized alphabetically. Listed under “P” we find the word propaganda, often mistakenly used as a synonym for lies. The accurate meaning is a “systematic effort to spread doctrine or opinions.”

This guide is full of opinions, mostly sensible, such as this one: Do not imagine that you can disguise the absence of thought with long words, stale metaphors, or the empty jargon of academics. Clarity matters. Articles have their foundation in ideas, analysis, and argument.

Style Guide wags its finger at times, even if what it says is good practice. Avoid using ought and should, it says. Don’t be chatty, over-familiar, or stuffy. While The Economist is a model of clear business writing, it can be stiff-upper-lippish. Annoyingly, it refuses to employ American usage in US editions of its what-they-insist-on-calling a newspaper. You and I would call this print publication a weekly magazine.

This reference book will give writers confidence and accuracy in their use of language. The Economist has global reach, and its guide is especially useful for anyone writing for an international business audience. Style Guide seeks to avoid confusion by addressing differences between British and American usage. Public school in the United States is free, run by the state and local districts. In the UK a public school is a private fee-paying institution.

Clarity of writing usually follows clarity of thought, says the Guide. This sounds a lot like plan and execute. But creativity is a non-linear process. Thinking and writing are intertwined and subject to constant revision. As one wit put it, declare an ending because revision can go on forever. All creativity comes about through engagement with a medium; paper, pen, back of a napkin, etc. Clarity of thought comes from writing.

"“A scrupulous writer”, observed Orwell, “in every sentence that he writes will ask himself at least four questions, thus: What am I trying to say? What words will express it? What image or idiom will make it clearer? Is this image fresh enough to have an effect? And he will probably ask himself two more: Could I put it more shortly? Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly?” Scrupulous writers will also notice that their copy is edited only lightly and is likely to be used. It may even be read.""

The Economist (2015-06-23). Style Guide (Economist Books) (Kindle Locations 114-118). PublicAffairs. Kindle Edition.

Almost all organizations today publish material. Businesses large and small must be consistent in their style. Employees and contributors need guidance. In-house style guides range from a simple style sheet of formatting instructions to broad resources drawn from The Gregg Reference Manual, arguably the most comprehensive style manual for professional business writers and editors.

Our language is a living thing. It undergoes constant change. This means style guides are subject to on-going editorial revision. After 50 years in print, The Gregg Reference Manual is now available online by subscription, and the Style Guide is available online to The Economist’s subscribers.

Every writer and editor needs a style guide.

Whether you’re writing articles, a book, blog, or magazine, find a style and stick to it.

Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets, by Dick Cavett

The legendary talk show host's humorous reminiscences and pointed commentary on the great figures he has known, and culture and politics today

For years, Dick Cavett played host to the nation's most famous personalities on his late-night talk show. In this humorous and evocative book, we get to hear Cavett's best tales, as he recounts great moments with the legendary entertainers who crossed his path and offers his own trenchant commentary on contemporary American culture and politics.

Pull up a chair and listen to Cavett's stories about one-upping Bette Davis, testifying on behalf of John Lennon, confronting Richard Nixon, scheming with John Updike, befriending William F. Buckley, and palling around with Groucho Marx. Sprinkled in are tales of his childhood in Nebraska in the 1940s and 1950s, where he honed his sense of comic timing and his love of magic.

Cavett is also a wry cultural observer, looking at America today and pointing out the foibles that we so often fail to notice about ourselves. And don't even get him started on politicians. A generation of Americans ended their evenings in Dick Cavett's company; Talk Show is a way to welcome him back.

From Publishers Weekly
The erstwhile host of The Dick Cavett Show unburdens himself in this collection of rambling though piquant essays from his New York Times online column. It' s an eclectic and sometimes surprising lineup: on- and off-set celebrity anecdotes; meditations on the art of the comic insult; jaundiced assessments of the 2008 presidential contenders; not one but two apologias for radio DJ Don Imus; scenes from a Nebraska boyhood, with minor hooliganism and encounters with a movie-house pervert. Cavett occasionally lets his affable host' s persona slip to voice idiosyncratic passions, in his plea to ban fat actors from TV commercials, for example, and his snipes at public figures for language mistakes and mispronunciations (he reviles George W. Bush almost as much for saying nucular as for starting the Iraq War). Some pieces misfire, especially when Cavett overuses transcripts from his shows; even the celebrated trash talk showdown between guests Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer lies flat on the printed page. But in his beguiling profiles of celebrities--the deft magician Slydini; the humbled gossip columnist Walter Winchell; an aging John Wayne, who reveals an unheralded appreciation for Nol Coward plays--Cavett proves himself a solid writer as well as a talker.

From Booklist
Cavett’s talk shows on ABC and later PBS were the perfect format for a former comedy writer who was also the son of English teachers. He was erudite and amusing and a great conversation partner to an array of guests, from Katharine Hepburn and Richard Burton to William F. Buckley and Norman Mailer. Drawing on his recollections from show business as well as his years growing up in Nebraska, Cavett offers a collection of his columns for the online New York Times. He revels in misuses and mispronunciations of words by the famous and those who should know better, comments on both political silliness and serious issues, and talks about political celebrities such as Sarah Palin and Rod Blagojevich. He recalls friendships with famously taciturn celebrities Johnny Carson and Bobby Fischer, testifying on behalf of John Lennon, sparring with Bette Davis, and hosting John Updike and John Cheever on the same show. Cavett is also personally revealing, recounting his bouts with depression, ego-bruising encounters with famous comedians, and career ups and downs. An enormously amusing and well-written collection. --Vanessa Bush

Review
“Breezy, incisive and amusing—nice to have you back, Dick.”—Kirkus Reviews“In his beguiling profiles of celebrities . . . Cavett proves himself a solid writer as well as a talker.”—Publishers Weekly“Do you know that age-old question, If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, living or dead, who would it be? Well, assuming Santa Claus is unavailable, my answer would be Dick Cavett. After reading Talk Show, you could just imagine what a conversation with him would be like: pleasant, insightful, and oddly erotic. Dick Cavett is a legend and an inspiration to me.”--Jimmy Fallon
“There’s never been a talk show to equal Dick Cavett’s. His guest list was miraculous, the conversations dazzling, and it’s a pleasure to relive much of it in this wonderful book.”--Woody Allen

Attention, Cavett fans!
By Debra Allen
Forgive my laziness but I'm basically copy/pasting the review of the other Cavett book because while they are, of course, different books, my feelings and opinions about both are essentially the same. As you can surely guess from the 5 stars, I'm a fan.

I've enjoyed Dick Cavett through assorted talk shows and other aspects of his career for more years than either of us would care to do the math on but I had never read one of his books. I'm sorry it took me so long to get around to doing that because I thoroughly enjoyed both this book and the other one I got (Brief Encounters) and I'll probably do a search to see what other books of his I can find. He's not everyone's taste (Who is?) but I found his stories to be full of wit, intelligence, and, where appropriate, humor.

Stop lollygagging and get this book already!

Great except for the political stuff
By Virginia music lover
I love reading about the world of Hollywood and entertainment in general. Cavett here has some wonderful stories about stars like Burton and John Wayne. He also talks about the development of his comedic career, a topic that interests me as to all entertainers. Where the book falls short is in his political writing. With all the punditry on television and the internet, that last thing I want to do is here more of it. It is easy enough to skip through those chapters but that meant I got 2/3s of a book. I'm giving it a four star rating but it easily could have been five.

Disappointing. Mostly reprinted columns and word for word quotes lifted from televised interviews.
By A Reader
If you watched Dick Cavett's interviews back when (and have fond memories of his shows, as I did) and want those memories to remain in tack then skip this read. A sizeable part of this book is simply reprints of the columns he wrote for the New York Times, and word for word rehash of the televised interviews, which gives you some idea of the amount of effort Mr. Cavett expended in writing this book. There is nothing fresh born of reflection, and little new born of experiences since his hey day. Only one thing came to light that I had been unaware of- Mr. Cavett's battle with depression which he briefly touches upon via a reprinted column. Anyone who has dealt with clinical depression or long bouts of deep depression will certainly empathize with him and respect his ability to slog through when in the depths. For the younger persons who never watched his shows this book may be shed some light on why he was regarded as a good comedy writer for the late night hosts. However, if they end up watching some of the Cavett interviews preserved on DVD's and conclude that Mr. Cavett does not come off as the witty and able interviewer we all gave him credit for being at the time, but more of a star struck Nebraska kid bumbling his way through interviews with celebs, I'd forgive them just as I forgive all of us (Mr. Cavett included) who bought into the hype at the time.

a great summer read for teens/adults
By danardoyle, author of The Answer for Families, Hope for Healing & God Messaging, Will You Accept...
"Past Suspicion" by Therese Heckenkamp is a terrific fiction novel suitable for teens and adults as well. It is the story of a young woman whose mother dies and leaves her in the care of an uncle that she has never met. Forced to live in an unfamiliar sleepy little town, Robin plans her escape upon her eighteenth birthday. While tolerating her circumstances and looking forward to "freedom," she discovers much about her mother's secretive past that intrigues her. This leads her to delve more deeply into the mysterious events of her mother's past. Along the way, Robin forms some special relationships and learns to love and to trust once again.

Therese masterfully develops the characters so that the reader truly feels involved in the story and has an interest in Robin's personal outcome. Though I usually prefer to read nonfiction, I was drawn to pick up Therese's book again and again as the characters were believable and their issues were things for which I felt I could relate. This book would make a great summer read for teens and adults! I know you will enjoy it!

A particularly compelling achievement
By Midwest Book Review
It is not often that I write about a woman who cut her first draft of a mystery at age eighteen, but it is true in the case of Therese Heckenkamp, a fellow Wisconsinite! Heckenkamp has already won numerous awards for writing at her young age and lives in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.
Robin Finley has just lost her mother, her home, and any family except an uncle in some small town in Wisconsin, where she is headed for an uncertain future. She meets two young men, almost right off the bat. One is a newspaper reporter, and the other is a "free spirit" who captures her imagination and desire for freedom. Then there is the matter of just what happened to her mother in this small town. She had a mysterious fall off of a balcony at a deserted mansion more than twenty years before. Robin begins to unravel the story of her mother's high school years: the romances; the "fall"; her relationship with Robin's quiet but caring uncle; and the map, which turns into the focal point of the story. Robin also overhears a conversation which leads her to believe she might be in danger:
"The words were spoken with such wrath, it hurt my ears to hear what little I did, but I had to stay and listen. What did this mean? I trembled in my hiding place. The very fact that these two guys-the only two guys I knew in this whole town-were together, alerted me that something was up..."
Being home-schooled, Heckenkamp probably understands something about the brilliant recluse. It shows in her writing. Her heroine is sensitive, angry, hurt, intelligent, stubborn, curious, and has a large heart underneath all of her confusion. She is a typical seventeen year old...Heckenkamp captures the angst of those years beautifully. Her plot is solid, and is very movie or television friendly...lots of action; pathos; conflict; glamour; etc. It's all there, and Heckenkamp is a confident and sure writer. She has no trouble keeping all of her balls in the air and resolving them at the end of this page-turner with a flair. Her denouement is terrifying, exciting, and then whoosh...she brings in the romantic element with panache.
Past Suspicion is a terrific first mystery/novel from a very promising talent. It is a particularly compelling achievement considering Ms. Heckenkamp has her future ahead of her. Bravo!

Clean and Exciting
By Aravis
After reading several disappointing or even disturbing Christian YA fiction books, I was reluctant to give Past Suspicion a chance. But when I discovered that the author was an eighteen-year-old homeschooler when she wrote the first draft, I bought the book, my expectations high. I wasn't let down. Past Suspicion is a decent suspense novel marked by tastefulness and believability.
Robin Finley, a sheltered seventeen-year-old, is forced to move to Wisconsin from California after her mother's sudden passing. Feeling stifled by the idea of small-town life with an uncle she barely knows, Robin counts the days until her grand escape to freedom on her eighteenth birthday. While working at her uncle's bookstore, she separately meets two young men interested in helping her sort out her mother's past, forever marked by her tragic fall from a local haunted mansion. Robin pores through old newspapers and her mother's teenage diary, trying to find the truth about the accident as the two young men compete for her attention. Now Robin must find out who her mother was - and who she herself will be - in the midst of a sinister plot that takes everyone by surprise.
Robin is a very believable character. She's no angel, but neither is she an aggravating brat. She's a very realistic, relatable teen struggling with a desire for freedom. She has moments of rebellion, passion, stubbornness, silliness, and gullibility, just like any average teen. Robin's intelligence and sense of decency make her very likeable and understandable.
What I really appreciated about this book is its ability to be exciting without compromising decency. Though the book contains elements of crime, violence, and evil, it never goes overboard. It's a definite accomplishment considering the plot revolves around two violent falls at a spooky mansion. Also tastefully handled is the romance element. Robin is being pursued romantically by two young men, but neither guy gets aggressive with her. Never does the book stray into raunchy territory at all; even though both guys spend some alone time with Robin, nothing inappropriate happens. The romance is understated and sweeter than commonly found in YA books, even other Christian ones.
Past Suspicion is a solid three star book that manages to be exciting without being tasteless. I recommend this one to readers age twelve and up who seek good, clean adventure tinged with romance and suspense. This is a story that will keep you flipping pages - or mashing Kindle keys.

Comprehensive, but extremely dry
By sarawithoutanh
Most likely, you're buying this book for a class, so you don't have a choice. I know that Fenich was one of the first (maybe the first?) to write a textbook on the MEEC industry, so he gets credit for that. However, he is one of the least compmelling writers I've ever read. I have to psych myself up before every chapter and make sure that I have some caffeine nearby to keep me awake. It's very dry and uninteresting, but informative.

Cruel Deeds and Dreadful Calamities: The Illustrated Police News 1864-1938, by Linda Stratmann

“Jack the Ripper Arrested with Victim Alice MacKenzie in Whitechapel.” “Boys Murder Their Mother. Revolting Crime at Plaistow—Shocking Details.” “Horrible Discovery of Human Remains at Rainham.” These are just some of the captions for the true crimes depicted in the Illustrated Police News. Best known for its meticulous coverage of the murders of Jack the Ripper, the weekly newspaper, published from 1864 until 1938, reported murders, hangings, and other dramatic crimes of the time alongside images packed with gruesome detail.

Unapologetic about its sensationalism, the Illustrated Police News has been often dismissed as of little value, merely a crude publication that aimed to thrill the undiscerning reader with prurient pictures. But in Cruel Deeds and Dreadful Calamities, Linda Stratmann sets the record straight, arguing that it was actually a promoter of social change. Stratmann examines its social and political agenda and reveals the power and compassion in its images. She argues that the publication campaigned against the evils of cruelty, poverty, drink, and crime. As well, it anticipated by many years the features of today’s journalism, in the rapidity with which it provided pictures of current news events, its appeal to the emotions, and the way it involved its readers in the reporting process.

A highly illustrated and comprehensive look at the Illustrated Police News, this book offers substantial new research into how the paper was produced, the men who made it a success, and the stories behind the pictures. This look into the dark underbelly of Victorian culture will appeal to both crime and history readers alike.

Selected Writings, by Alexandra Kollontai

“Alix Holt, in her careful, objective comments on the life and work of Miss Kollontai, has served her subject well. . . .She has given us this chance to become acquainted with the thought of a woman liberated before her time.” ―New York Times Book Review

Alexandra Kollontai―the only woman member of the Bolshevik central committee and the USSR’s first Minister of Social Welfare―is known today as a historic contributor to the international women’s movement, and as one of the first Bolshevik leaders to oppose the growth of the bureaucracy in the young socialist state. Her Selected Writings discuss the social democratic movement before the First World War, the history of the Russian women’s movement, and the debate between “feminist” and “socialist” women; the effects of the war on European socialism; the revolutions; the part played by women in the revolutionary events; the early manifestations of bureaucracy and Kollontai’s role as spokeswoman for the “workers’ opposition”; and morality, sexual politics, the family, and prostitution. It also includes writings from her later life as a Soviet official. Each section is introduced by a commentary in which Alix Holt explains the background and critically sets Kollontai’s unique lifework in its historical and biographical contexts, demonstrating both its necessary limitations and its extraordinary range.

Relevant?
By EriKa
Lately as I have been rereading texts by such writers and thinkers as Alexandra Kollontai, Rosa Luxemburg and later analysis of their thinking by Raya Dunayevskaya, I ask myself the same question people ask me, perplexed as they see that I am reading something so "outdated" about a system that was "proven wrong": is this information relevant today, aside from the historical perspective gained from it? Yes, I argue that it is very relevant. It proves, if nothing else, that issues, particularly for women, that were issues 100 years ago are still issues today. Many societies have made little or no social progress, and some have arguably moved backwards.

This particular book, with analysis from Alix Holt, is quite useful and telling because Holt provides a context and an even-handed critique of Kollontai's writing. Kollontai has been dismissed by many as an overly idealistic thinker, and her thoughts on family and sexuality have earned Kollontai an undeserved reputation as someone who advocated sexual promiscuity and irresponsibility as well as "moral decay". Naturally these analyses are overly simplistic; Kollontai was a revolutionary (not just in the traditional sense, having participated actively in the Russian Revolution and serving as Lenin's only female commissar, but also a revolutionary on social norms and sociology). Kollontai questioned the role of family in society and predicted that "family" as the nuclear unit would cease to exist (under socialism/Communism, in her evaluation) because family is an economic/need-based construct. The erosion of the family unit as economic unit would change the dynamics between men and women and would create the need for in depth evaluation of sexuality and the basis for relationships. Kollontai asked many questions on this topic in earnest, which were integral questions to the development of Soviet society (beset by major problems as it was) yet as time went on, her ideas were marginalized and even demonized. As the Soviet propaganda machine grew (mostly under Stalin), Kollontai no longer had a voice. Suddenly these ideas, in the words of Alix Holt, "became more and more preposterous and the party quite sensibly put its foot down. In actual fact, things were quite otherwise, for her ideas changed very little. It was the attitudes of men and women both inside and outside the party that were changing and giving rise to objections against what had previously been accepted without question." Kollontai watched the Revolution for which she had fought (and in the name of which she had been blind and naive to many realities) be co-opted by the Stalin personality cult and excessive bureaucracy. It is evident that Kollontai was a personality more than a philosopher. She had beliefs and ideas, but she, as Holt points out in later analysis, failed to form her observations into real and meaningful analysis. Many of her most striking ideas are barely developed. Kollontai objected to being linked with a women's movement or a feminist movement in her time because she felt that women's rights would be part and parcel of any successful proletarian revolution, and that equality would be achieved automatically. This is part of Kollontai's short-sightedness, faithfully documented in this book and analyzed by Holt. Kollontai had valuable ideas she never researched or explored fully; she recognized intrinsic problems within society (particularly those pertaining to women and children), but she blindly accepted that the revolution and the Soviet government would take care of all these things. By the time she realized that the "dream" was slipping away, it was too late. Stalin had the power to silence her one way or another (she is one of the few to survive the purges, although it can be argued that she was sidelined effectively by being sent as Soviet ambassador to Norway, Mexico, etc.)

This book coupled with other readings about or by Kollontai give a vivid picture of Russia during and after the revolution and the hopes many people shared for building a worker's society. The book also illustrates, as I stated, how the same concerns that Kollontai and colleagues faced in forming a new government still plague society today. Although strides have been made in "granting" women more equality, they are still not "equal" in many regards. Kollontai, who was so ahead of her time, gives modern women pause to consider that if serious feminist and equality matters are STILL problematic now, almost 100 years after Kollontai was fighting for the equality of all people, we have not really "blazed the trail" to women's rights. At the same time, though, it is not just society "holding women back" but also the attitudes of many women themselves. (For example, Bill Maher said that when women want to elect a woman to the US presidency, they will. They have the majority. It is not society necessarily that isn't ready; perhaps it's women themselves.) Unfortunately Kollontai faced an uphill battle educating people as to their individual rights and responsibilities... we still face this issue now. Relevant? Absolutely so.
