When package holidays began, all of a sudden we could

experience life at close quarters with people from other

nations. We thought the Germans were the most ridiculous

people on the beach.

As Monty Python pointed out years ago, they pinched

the sun beds and barged into the queues and frightened

the children. And if you weren’t at the buffet spot-on

seven, Fritz had wolfed all the sausages.

But with the advent of the Boeing� 747 came the longhaul

holiday and we realised that the Germans were

country mice compared with the Americans. No shorts

were too large, no thong was too small.

What’s more, Hank does not like to sit on the beach

and read a book. He likes to shout and play volleyball.

When the Yanks are around, it’s like being on holiday in

a primary school playground.

For years the Americans were in a class of their own,

but then the Berlin Wall fell down and, as a result, from

the Indian Ocean through the Middle East and the Mediterranean

to the Caribbean, Boris and Katya were making

all the running.

In many ways the Russians are like the Americans.

They’re either far too fat or far too beautiful. There’s no

middle ground. And again, like Uncle Sam, no part of

the body is immune from man-made enhancement. The

Americans go for surf-white teeth; the Russians for alarming

special forces tattoos. And neither seems to see anything

wrong with breast enlargement. I saw one Russian

woman on the beach in Barbados the other day who had

the body of a walnut and a chest that put Antigua in the

shade.

However, where the Russians move into an easy lead

is beach attire. For the men it’s the traditional Speedo,

while the women seem to get their fashion pointers from

internet porn sites. I haven’t yet seen anyone strutting

down the beach in stockings and suspenders but it’s only

a matter of time.

Today, though, a new contender has come along and

blown the old favourites into the seaweed. The title of

Most Stupid People on the Beach has gone in� 2004 . . .

to Britain.

We were designed to make Spitfires and Beagles. We’re

supposed to be in a shed, in gloves, inventing stuff. We

therefore do not look good on a beach. We’re piggy

white and if you expose us to the sun, we turn into

Battenburg cake.

We’re designed for bracing walks along the front in

Scarborough and wet camping holidays in Scotland. But

our newly discovered wealth means we can now go to

the tropics. Because it’s new money, we really have no

idea what to do with it.

Typical Clarkson. Laugh out loud hilarity!

What a great compendium of Clarksons' Sunday Times articles. Me being an American imbecile that knows nothing of British humour (wink) even I can appreciate his, well "Clarksonesque" view of a broad range of topics from international travels, local and international politics and his deep love-for and appreciation of all things mechanical, especially aeroplanes. This is a must read for anyone just looking for a laugh.

Fun, light-hearted reading

Most enjoyable. I have lived abroad for many years and not followed many English programs so I was not especially aware of who Clarkson was. Now I know.His humor is wonderful and exactly what grabs my attention. The first book was recommended to me by an American friend. "Here," he said, "You're English, you'll enjoy this book. He was right.
An easy, light read, good for putting you in a fun frame of mind. Definitely recommend. That's why I have bought further editions for me and a friend. The Slope of Kongwa Hill: A Boy's Tale of Africa.

An Interesting Look at the World

You really need to be a resident of the UK to understand most of the book, but the humor is still international. Just be aware that the whole book is a reprint of his daily column that has been formed into a book. Good read and often insightful.

Excellent Insights But Lacking In Helpful Advice

I often recommend Susan Forward's other books, "Toxic Parents" and "Emotional Blackmail" in my ministry for adult children of abusive or controlling birth-families (Luke 17:3 Ministries). I read "Toxic In-Laws" in the hopes of adding yet another dimension to the damage overbearing or controlling parents can do to your life.

I liked how the book started out, describing the types of toxic in-laws, which include Critics, Engulfers, Controllers. Rejectors, and Masters of Chaos. The analysis of why they behave this way was right on. Examples of the reasons why include concern over "what people will think", a missing empathy gene, holding onto your partner (their child) at all costs, acting out old scripts, and exorcising their demons by attacking you. The author is so right when she warns young marrieds that if they think the in-laws are controlling now, just wait till the grandkids come along! She teaches us that although many of us cling to the false hope that "once they get to know me, they'll like me", time doesn't help and usually worsens the hostility.

We are shown that we are part of a triangle- often viewed as competition by our spouses' parents. Many times they don't like that they now have to deal with you, and that their issues are no longer just between them and their child. They know you influence their child and are angry that their child has "left them" for you. They may have rigid opinions, think they know everything and you (and/or their child) know nothing , and will distort reality to make it conform to their truth.

Unfortunately, the child of such in-laws usually does not stand up for his or her spouse. The spouse is left feeling like an outsider with everyone against her. She often feels totally betrayed by a spouse who lets his parents criticize, insult, or abuse her.

Much of the rest of the book is devoted to enlisting your spouse as an ally so that you can make a united front against his parents' behavior. Unfortunately, in my ministry experience, most attempts at getting your partner to stand up to his parents and defend you will fail, but I agree that it's worth a shot, before taking matters into your own hands. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a waste, but I did feel that the author devoted a great deal of time to strategies for getting your spouse to support you, when what he will really need before he can stand up to his parents, is years of therapy!

There is an empowering chapter on rights and responsibilities. Many of us ask ourselves if we have the right to upset everyone, to speak up to our in-laws when they hurt us even though they're not our parents, to put our spouse in the middle, or to expect him to take our side.

The author lists our rights as a person and with our spouse, which include the right to be treated with respect, to protect your own emotional health, to get angry, to raise your children without interference, to change your mind, to express your own feelings and opinions, to set guidelines with your partner for your household and have them honored, to protest to your partner when his parents hurt you, to expect your partner to put you first, etc.

Our rights with our in-laws include the right to say no, to disagree, to not love them, to let them know when they've offended you, to have them stay out of problems between you and your husband, to set limits on how much time you spend with them, to take an active part in how holidays are celebrated, etc.

We are warned that although these rights are a matter of freedom and common sense, everyone resists change. Accepting the fact that in many cases, we will be standing up to our in-laws alone, the author prepares us for confrontation by teaching us the skill of non-defensive communication in setting limits on our in-laws and their behavior. She teaches us how to stand fast against their reactions, and appropriate responses when they pull out the big guns such as denial, anger, playing the martyr, or accusing us of being the problem.

Sometimes we will set limits on our in-laws (or parents) and they will not respond at all. We may not hear from them again. We may be confused and wonder what is going on. But the author tells us that "No answer is the loudest answer of all." We are helped to accept that sometimes nothing will get resolved, but that will be their failure, not ours. The important thing is that we hold to our truth and live in peace, with or without them.

Helped me diffuse my angry feelings

Let me begin by saying there isn't a book by Susan Forward that isn't very helpful in making you understand what the problem really is and how to make it better. Her book on verbal abuse was so excellent. I think I have read ALL of her books. What makes this book great is that she gives numerous examples of different couples and their in-law problems so there is a very good probability you will find your specific problem in the book. The strategies given are ones you may not have even considered in your frustration of dealing with your obnoxious self centered in law(s). I was very angry before I read this, now I'm just mildly amused. I won't be controlled with my own resentments/emotions any more. Susan will help you understand their ... little world of either not being able to "share" the love, or whatever unresolved mess is in their minds, so you wont/dont take it personally.

Toxic In Laws meets expectations

I ordered Toxic In Laws after enduring yet another horrible holiday season with my in-laws. I was prompted to order the book because of the "protecting your marriage" part of the title. In the past, I've been angry with my in-laws on many occasions, but usually I just put it behind me. This Christmas, however, my mother-in-law verbally attacked our young son, and that was the end of the line for me. I had concerns about being able to effectively communicate my position to my husband, and as many of Dr. Forward's clients mention in the book, I have never felt like my husband was completely on my side. In reading the book, I could pull out specific examples of behaviours that are very similar if not identical to things we've gone through with my in-laws, and I was able to share the information with my husband. I felt very empowered by the book, and began to realize that there is no way that one person in a relationship involving three other people can possibly "fix" it all by themselves. The book gave me suggestions about what to say to my husband and helped me move past communicating from anger and hurt to a more rational and sincere way of speaking. I would highly recommend this book to anyone having trouble with in-laws who is concerned about the effects on your marriage. I wish I'd read it sooner. We are still going through the process of dealing with this and I don't know how it will all come out. Dr. Forward isn't promising any quick fixes. I do know, however, that if the very worst happened and my husband and I were to break up over these issues with his parents, that I would feel totally comfortable that I had done all I could to stand for myself while supporting my husband and protecting my kids.

A Winner!

James Gelvin's "Arab Uprisings" is a must read if you've been trying to follow the events unfolding in the Middle East. I have tried to keep up with the "where" and "why of each rebellion and/or revolution, but the sheer numbers often made it confusing that often left me with more questions than answers. Gelvin's book was what I was looking for. It sheds light on the historical, political, and cultural aspects that each country has undergone by linking the various uprisings in the differing states (such as Tunisia and Egypt, Libya and Yemen, Algeria and Syria, and the monarchies). The book is clearly written, and the Q &A format makes for an easy but substantive read. Each answer reads like a mini-essay, and I particularly enjoyed the answers to "Where did the phrase `Arab Spring' come from?", "How appropriate is it to describe events in the Arab world?", "What are the ten biggest myths about the Egyptian uprising?", and "Was Qaddafi crazy or crazy like a fox?" The author obviously knows his history as well as the contemporary issues confronting the region. (His "Modern Middle East" and "Israel/Palestine Conflict" are also must reads.) The last section of "Arab Uprisings" is illuminating in showing the impact of the uprisings on both the American and Iranian positions in the region, on the Israel-Palestine Conflict, and on al-Qaeda. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Gelvin fulfills his promise with the book's sub-title, "What Everyone Needs to Know," because I walked away having a greater understanding of what's going on in the Middle East. I now can watch the continuing unfolding of events with both the information and confidence that the author has provided.

_The Arab Uprisings: what everyone needs to know_ is a must-read for anyone interested in gaining an understanding of the "Arab Spring" of 2011. Written in a question-and-answer format, Galvin clearly explains the causes of the revolutions that swept the Arab world, drawing parallels between nations and clarifying the complex interplay of economics, demographics and politics in the political change that is still unfolding.

The book begins with a brief primer on the Arab world - the cultural similarities and the broad economic and political climate of the region before the uprisings began. Galvin then argues that the revolutions were the result of four factors: economic promises made by the regimes to their people that fell apart, a "youth bulge", food crises and political brittleness of their autocracies. While there are some variations, these four themes are revisted as the revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Libya and Syria are explored in detail.

The final chapter, in which Galvin fields questions about the "long view" of the Arab Spring is a bit odd, the questions more along the lines of political science than history. To his credit, Galvin reminds readers that these events are still unfolding, writing, "The moral of the story (of the uprisings) is that historical analogies do not explain and do not instruct, although for historians and history geeks their entertainment value cannot be overestimated." Similar questions about the role and impact of American foreign policy in fomenting the Arab Spring and what the implications of the uprisings are for the United States are similarly swatted away, and rightfully so, I think.

While events are still being played out regarding the effects of the spring of 2011, this is an outstanding primer on the subject - rich in detail and clearly and simply written. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the region or recent events there.

Jeffrey A. Bader is a visiting scholar with the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution. He returned to Brookings after serving in the Obama administration as senior director for East Asian affairs on the National Security Council from January 2009 to April 2011. Before his appointment to the Obama administration, Bader was the first director of the John L. Thornton China Center at Brookings, where he was also a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy program. He brings profound expertise and over thirty years of experience in U.S. foreign policy and Asian security.

The main geostrategic challenge facing Asia--as well as the U.S. presence there--has been the extraordinary rise of China in the past decade. In Obama and China's Rise, Jeffrey Bader, a veteran diplomat of over 30 years, recounts his experiences working for Obama's presidential campaign and serving as the senior director for East Asian affairs on Obama's National Security Council from January 2009 to April 2011.

Bader starts off outlining the Obama administration's seven major goals in Asia: 1) rebalance U.S. global priorities with greater attention paid to Asia, 2) promote a stable relationship and closer cooperation with China on international issues, 3) work towards complete denuclearization in North Korea through bilateral or multilateral negotiations, 4) strengthen and participate in Asian regional institutions, 5) strengthen alliances and partnerships--especially with Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, and Australia, 6) maintain forward deployment of U.S. armed forces in the region, and 7) negotiate agreements to expand trade and exports to the region.

The Obama team was fully aware of the importance of maintaining a stable and functional relationship with China. From the 2008 campaign on, the administration was careful not to label China as the bogeyman of all America's ailments.

The book is organized around three phases of major U.S.-China interactions that occurred during Bader's tenure at the National Security Council. The first stage was to lay the groundwork for a stable and healthy bilateral relationship. On April 1, 2009, President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao announced the establishment of the Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED), which would provide a platform for a dozen officials from each side to meet annually. This mechanism is unprecedented in U.S. relations with any other country in the world, which indicates the paramount importance the Obama administration attached to China. The first phase also involved Obama's first trip to China, close cooperation on North Korea and Iran, parallel implementation of economic stimulus packages, and some limited cooperation at the Copenhagen Climate Conference.

Despite this progress, the Obama administration has faced a China more assertive than at any other time in recent memory. This was especially true in 2010, a year defined by Chinese assertiveness and the second phase of Obama's dealings with China. In 2010, Chinese policy tilted toward sheltering North Korea from international sanctions. The Chinese also excluded the United States from military activities in the Yellow Sea and engaged in an overt confrontation with Japan after the collision of a Chinese fishing boat with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol boats in disputed waters near the Senkaku Islands--with the latter leading to a temporary freeze on Chinese rare earth exports to Japan. China also threatened to halt imports from companies that engaged in arms sales to Taiwan, a pointed jab at U.S. weapons sales to the country. Perhaps most significantly, China aggressively expanded its claims on the South China Sea.

The Obama administration reacted by signaling to China that assertiveness would only make China lose critical economic partners. Yet even as the United States acknowledged the inevitability of China's rise, Bader summarizes that the Obama administration pragmatically "sought to ensure that China's rise served to stabilize, not destabilize, the Asia-Pacific region, which included five U.S. allies and other partners in whose security Americans had an interest."

In light of this, the Obama administration reasserted U.S. interests in the South China Sea and reiterated America's commitment to Japan's security, even while remaining ostensibly neutral on the question of the Senkaku Islands. Bader believes that China clumsily alienated its partners in the region, yet its foreign policy analysts confused cause and effect and blamed the United States for the deterioration in China's relations with its neighbors. Bader writes that by the end of 2010, China had begun to rethink its assertive posturing.

Bader suggests that it was not until early 2011, when Hu Jintao visited the United States, that U.S.-China bilateral relations began to get back on track, opening up what Bader considers the third stage, which has been marked by continued progress on security issues and greater emphasis on bilateral and global economic issues as China approaches its once-a-decade leadership transition.

According to Bader's assessment, the Obama administration managed the key issues in the bilateral relationship quite well, making important progress on Iran, climate change, North Korea, and the world economy. Although Bader supports the administration's "strategic pivot" to East Asia, he believes the term is a misnomer that over-militarizes the actual implications of the policy. The net U.S. military presence is not going to increase except with the deployment of 2,500 U.S. Marines to Darwin, Australia. What better characterizes the dynamic, Bader argues, quoting National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon, is a "rebalancing of U.S. priorities toward the Asia-Pacific."

Obama and China's Rise is the first account of Asia policy-making in the Obama administration written by someone who was part of the effort. Bader's account captures the details while contextualizing them in the larger picture. However, Bader's account does not reveal much about the disagreements among various policymakers about how best to deal with China and Asia at large, nor about how the administration decided on which strategy to pursue. Obama and China's Rise is a fine account of what the administration did, but is less suitable for those curious about why.

Informative but Sounds Like a Campaign Ad

This is an educational piece by Jeffrey Bader that provides a brief recap of the diplomatic encounters between the US and China during President Barack Obama's first term. Bader's text provides a humble yet subjective account of the Obama Administration. The author is careful not to make assumptions about situations that he did not experience firsthand however, he portrays everything in a tone that seems to glorify the administration to a point beyond the ability to be criticized in any way. This book is filled with the outcome of events but does not give any insight as to the process by which the final decisions were made and why.

So bad!

I usually only bother to write a review if a book is really super good or really super bad. This was in the really superbad category, unfortunatly. This author thought he was sooo cool because he was a meth cook and was so proud of himself, it made me sick. When I was reading it I kept thinking it had to get better, but it just went on and on and on and on.... He cooked a batch and got with some chick, he cooked another batch and got with another chick, he cooked yet another batch.... And I think you get my point.

The author was not a bad writer, actually, but the content was so unimpressive that it did nothing to redeem this book in my eyes. He repeatedly calls women, almost every woman in the book, actually, either a bitc* or a "dope whore" or "crack whore". Unless you want to read a very repetitive account of a guy making, selling, and doing meth, and being real proud of it, don't buy it.... I sure wish I hadn't!

I absolutely loved the book and would recomend it to anyone who has a loved one who has been involved in the meth world. My husband got involved with meth/ice and it has destroyed everything including our family. I was new to the drug scene when his use started and I was totally blown away when I found out which was just about a year ago. Now I cant read enough about this horrible meth world, i'm just trying to make sense of it all and understand the mindset of someone who is going through this. My outlook on meth has totally changed in the past year and until someone goes through it ( which I wouldnt wish on my worst enemy)they have no clue what they are dealing with and they have no understand of how we still love our meth users. We see them go through hell and we cant do anything about - just sit and wait and be relieved when we get a call that they are in jail then at least we know that they are still alive and will be until they get out of jail again. I think the bad reviews might come from the fact that some people dont understand the repetion of the meth world. I can say firsthand that this is all so true and I can relate to every page in it.

Oh, what a world. What a world.

I felt like I had to take a shower after reading this book. I've known people like the ones who were characterized in Wayne's story. And I hope never to associate with them again.

Meth is a soul-destroying drug. The characters in this book are dirty, trailer trash, pathetic morons who are convinced their life has never been better.

I appreciate the author's honesty and talent in being able to weave together a pretty good story out of circumstances that would devastate most people. But he just hopped right back up on his horse (meth trade) and continued with the pathetic lifestyle that made him feel like an important person because a bunch of pathetic lowlifes treated him like a king to get some of his dope. It's sad.
