A thrilling look into the turbulent world that is commercial aviation!

I just finished reading Flight for Safety and Flight for Control. I thoroughly enjoyed both. They truly are books that "I couldn't put down." I read both in two days. The twists and turns in the plot were always me think "what is going to happen next".

The level of technical detail/accuracy is incredible but without being overwhelming. It felt like I was almost sat on the jumpseat in the flight deck. The fact that real world accidents/incidents are the basis of many parts of the book make it even more compelling. The description of many of the characters will be recognized by many who work in the airline industry, such as the empire builders, "management" pilots with an agenda, the dubious Sim instructor/check airman and of course the good guys/gals who keep the show on the road.

I can't wait for the next book! The issues which you cover are so relevant and it is great to get perspective on what flying for an airline in the USA is like. Thank you!

A Must Read for All Who Fly Commercially!

I loved the first book in this series: “Flight for Control" and once I picked it up and I couldn't put it down.
Both books keep you at the edge of your seat dying to see what happens next, but this second book really gives you an insider’s view into commercial aviation. It really makes you appreciate the men and women that fly passengers around the world safely each and every day. Flying is indeed the safest mode of transportation, however like all things there is room for improvement, and we the passengers can help. This book has awesome characters, a riveting story-line and lessons we can all learn from.

Intriguing thriller!

I love Flight for Safety. The author has done it again. I couldn't put it down. I knew that would happen with Petitt's work so I waited until I had time off so I wouldn't get in trouble for not going to work because I was glued to this book! I could totally get into the characters and plot, but more than that, I love the subject, the inside look at the aviation industry and the thought-provoking issues brought up. This is more than an intriguing thriller. Highly recommended.

Literary Gem

I honestly cannot believe that I am the first person to review this book. Although I accidentally stumbled across this in a library sale bin about 15 years ago, and I've never talked to anyone else who's read it, I always held the conviction that this was a cult classic of sorts with a rabid fanbase. Apparently not.

First thing first, I will not condescend by provided any plot synopsis. The last thing I want to read in a review is "what happens in the book." What I will say is that this book is a genius tale. It contains elements of dark humor, realism and for a backdrop a world nearly as fully realized as those of Tolkien, Wolfe and Herbert. The story is essentially a nice little atheist parable to boot.

Unlike most lame fantasy novels, this is not a rip-off of Tolkien. It's also not one of those stupid fantasy books where a mild-mannered nebbish from our world is magically transported to a realm of sword and sorcery where he seduces large-breasted barbarian women and learns spells while wielding magical items. I enjoy science fiction and fantasy, but a very large proportion of the genre seems to be engaged in some sort of intellectually stunted exercise in swindling virginal high-school kids.

The downlow is that Bruce Fergusson doesn't get the recognition he deserves. "The Shadow of his Wings" is a classic. In a way, I'm glad it isn't part of a series of 12 books. Sci/Fi & Fantasy as a genre should be an outlet for some of the most creative literature. Whole worlds can be created. Unfortunately, what we get is garbage with titles like "Dragonwind Crossbow of the Dwarf King; Book 7 of the Tales of Acnea: Cycle of the Neverending Sequels" or 6 unnecessary sequels to the original Dune trilogy. But with Fergusson we get an engaging narrative, believable characters and some really impressively creative plot devices.

If you're the type to take the advice of strangers on the internet, take my recommendation and read this book. Look, I gave it five stars. I need to feel validated and get at least one other person to read it.

Colorful cover, dark and tragic story

Bruce Fergusson's "Shadow of His Wings" is the first book in the Six Kingdoms series and takes place in the Kingdom of Myrcia. It tells the tale of Lukan Barra, a common woodworker in the city of Castlecliff who after failing to achieve the final woodworkers seal of approval decides to seek his fortune elsewhere. Unfortunately, the city soon falls under siege by the neighboring kingdom of Skarria, causing chaos. Lukan agrees to undertake a city sanctioned quest to venture to the lair of Rizzix, a mighty Erseiyr (an immortal dragon-like creature of legend) in hopes of securing its assistance in defending the city against the Skarrian siege. Here are my thoughts;

Pros

+ Adult themed fantasy story that deals with some harsh topics.

+ Author names practically everything from city streets, inns, statues, rivers, roads, kingdoms etc.

+ Heroes are all flawed and far from perfect. No squeaky clean do-gooders here.

+ Well written story. The battle sequences in particular are quite well written and gritty.

+ Skarrians were an interesting people. I wish the author had spent more time describing their culture.

Cons

- Author uses several words which are difficult to comprehend by the context of the story. Examples include (panniers - pouch? spurrose - crest? diadem - barbed garrote? stelliars - something with soldiers or the castle? cillas - no idea? flenx - horned wolf or cat?). A glossary would have been nice.

- Story is written in the first person. Something I'm not really a fan of.

- Prison chapter is very graphic and may be shocking to some readers.

- No map. Always one of my biggest gripes in many fantasy novels. A map or maps were definitely needed in this book as the author was so overly descriptive about places within the city and the neighboring areas.

This book sat on my shelves for at least 20 years. To be perfectly honest it was because of the cover art. I picked it up countless times and always put it down because of the art. Luckily the story itself bears a very vague resemblance to the bright cover illustration. The story is not very uplifting and the characters face many hardships. The back teaser does a great job at describing the story. This book was quite different compared to the preconceived notions I had formed about it based on the cover. If you like your fantasy a bit more dark and less on the fantastical side then this book may appeal to you.

Found this one at a local bookstore and the title and cover art won me. The paperback I own has a beautiful cover by Darrell K Sweet and is a depiction of the Erseiyr in flight presumably with the main character Lukan on his back. The Erseiyr are a dying race of creatures that are similar to dragons. The story is great, it hooked me from the beginning especially with the first person monologue. The part of the book pertaining to Lukan's time in prison was pretty graphic so be warned, but you expect that sort of thing to make it real. The story has lots of things going for it including betrayal, suffering, love, redemption, and simply the will to overcome any adversity. I cannot think of a single thing that I didn't like about this book. Besides, I only know of one other book by this author and that saddens me because I would have liked to see more.

John Lennon's Favorite Book About The Beatles

Mr. Braun's book, published in 1964, was years ahead of its time. It presents an honest, unvarnished (one of the group even utters the then-taboo "f" word) account of the 1963-1964 period of The Beatles' career. It fell into obscurity at the time of its publication because it so obviously contradicted the lovable mop-top image of the boys from Liverpool then so current and lucrative for the media machine that was making a lot of money from their reportage of the band. John Lennon cited it as the only honest account of their career in his infamous 1971 Rolling Stone magazine interview. It even hints at some of the problems that would eventually destroy the group. One of these was the early separation of Paul McCartney from the rest of the band as regards his attitude toward their success. The rest of the group had taken to calling Mr. McCartney "the star" because of his hugely swelled head. And this was before that they had even come to America. Those interested in the Beatles will enjoy this book. But for the real fans and scholars (many, many sections of it have been repeated almost verbatim in nearly every subsequent biography - so many that you may feel as if you've read it already) of this band it is essential.

Hard to find in USA

I was trying to find this book for years as Lennon said it was the most accurate portrayal of The Beatles at the time. With so many books written with the knowledge of history it's interesting to read one written when no one knew how it would all play out.

Burns H. Weston (1933-2015) was the Bessie Dutton Murray Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus and Founder and Senior Scholar of the Center for Human Rights at The University of Iowa. Anna Grear is Professor of Law and Theory at Cardiff University School of Law and Politics, Editor in Chief of the Journal of Human Rights and the Environment, and Director of the Global Network for the Study of Human Rights and the Environment (GNHRE).

Great book on how economics effect human rights.

This text on human rights consists of essays by more than thirty scholars, each one arguing a different aspect of human rights. One thing they all have in common is that they discuss how a nation’s economy effects how the rights are enjoyed.

In the seventeenth essay, Judy Fudge (University of Kent) discusses how labor rights have changed as countries move from heavy industry to digital business. She begins with a quote by Bob Hepple, about rights being little more than “paper tigers,” which is an essential problem discussed in this book. She writes about “social rights” as a way to address the deficits of citizenship, and by deficits, I mean the economic inequalities. Just because the law says “everyone is equal” doesn’t mean it’s going to happen that way. Businesses can still promote sexism, and though not discussed in her essay, disabled people can be kept out of a lot of jobs for image reasons. Fudge also discusses how the courts are uneasy at dealing with social rights, owing to their debatable nature as opposed to being codified.

Michael Ignatieff (former politician from Canada) writes about the USA’s focus on civil rights at home while at the same time sponsoring dictatorship in Latin America. The USA, despite the famous Bill of Rights, opted out of the UN declaration of children’s rights, and dragged its heels on the UN convention on genocide. It wasn’t that the USA had no desire for involvement, but that the USA could not use foreign rules in its own courts. I admit that children’s rights go begging in the USA, as seen with the “kids-for-cash” scandal in Pennsylvania. Perhaps US lawmakers, aware of the problem at home, don’t want to look hypocritical. Thanks to the US doctrine of states’ rights, it is difficult for our central government to make laws for the entire nation. Rights an autonomy can be a fickle thing, no?

Human rights are difficult to guarantee anywhere, as opposed to rule of law. It was an issue back in the feudal England, when the Barons could do as they pleased to the serfs. It was a problem in Russia, when the serfs were literally commodities, and the only reason the Czars ended serfdom was that it impeded industrialization. Even in the United States, it’s a problem on the micro level, especially with regard to families. Take for instance the right to keep the money you earn; if a teenage girl in The Bronx has an afterschool job, what’s to stop the girl’s irresponsible mother from bullying her into handing over her paycheck?

The recent book by Janette Sadik-Khan, titled Street Fight, discusses the city of Medellin and what I call “commuter’s inequality.” If you have all the poor people living in the hills above the city, and the commute to town is a two-hour bus ride, then how will the people get to work? If all the public-funded schools are in town, how will the kids get to school? As is the case with many of the arguments in Human Rights in the World Community, many of the deficits of rights are actually deficits of the economy. Poor people are more likely to pull kids out of school and send them to work, so there’s less guarantee that a right to education will be enforced.

Highly entertaining, new angle on man vs. nature

I've spent my life in the western U.S. outdoors, but until I read this book I had no idea that a fish and game warden's life could be so interesting. Terry Grosz is not a polished writer, as mentioned by other reviewers, but he very is entertaining and obviously has a way of seeking out adventure in his love for nature. Each chapter is a fairly self-contained story, which is nice for those of us who only have time for a brief read between work weeks. Grosz points out that game wardens are more likely to die violent deaths than cops, which sort of sets the stage for his action-adventure tales of wardens vs. poachers, all the while emphasizing the importance of wildlife preservation. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the western US outdoors experience, wildlife preservation and even someone just looking to be entertained.

Helped shape a path for me

I bought this book back when I was a junior in high school, in 2002. At the time I was considering where I wanted to go to school and what I wanted to major in. This book, and others by Terry, helped me decide that wildlife conservation was my path. I've since graduated from Humboldt State with my BS in Wildlife Management and Conservation and will be applying this fall as a Conservation Officer in Idaho. Wildlife management takes many forms, from academia to habitat management, but I've decided I can best protect "America's wildlife heritage" by being part of the first line of defense against their destruction thanks in large part to getting a idea of the field from Terry's first hand experiences. Terry also stresses the importance of community support and education if we are to have a hope of winning the wildlife wars. The field of wildlife is my passion, and Terry's books helped put me on that path.

Another great book by a great author

My husband is a Game Warden and I bought this for him. He could not put it down! He said it was very well written and very interesting. He then passed it along to his fellow officers, recommending it to all of them.
