Dr. Sue validates those experiences by acknowledging their existence, the prejudice that underlies them, and the addition of insult to injury by the perpetrators' denial of the offense they have committed once confronted with it. As important as it is for people of color and women of all colors to read this, it is most important for white Americans - and men in general - to read this and similar works to gain awareness of the prejudices they unconsciously hold - no matter how liberal they may think they are, by virtue of their position and privilege in a racially stratified, male dominated society.

Too "in-depth". Not easy to read but packaged with good TSQL info. Not for the newbie.

I just went yesterday to a famous bookstore here in town to check this one before order it online and left a bit disappointed, with no desire at all to buy it. Don't get me wrong, Itzik is an awesome writer, a genius on his field, but I do not share the previous 5 start opinions and I will explain why.

I do not consider myself an TSQL expert but got some SQL DBA years on my belt and a MCTS cert too. Having said that and after almost finish reading Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (PRO-Developer), same author, I found this one very difficult to follow, flooded with tons of theory and math that for a TSQL book is in my opinion too much. Yes, SQL language has strong logic and math background but that is not what DBAs or developers are looking on a technical book and this is not a college book either; people are looking for practical books which can be quickly be applied on daily job activities.

Chapter #2 for example is full of logic and math stuff that I honestly skipped immediately. Nice as bonus information but not "straight to the point" T-SQL stuff. You can easily take that chapter out and keep the book lighter in my honest opinion. Same for Chapter#3, more logic and math stuff, related to T-SQL, yes, but no the real stuff.

Chapter 1, 7 and 10 are taken of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (PRO-Developer), which by the way, is an outstanding book. Those chapters are about SELECT, JOINS and DML, information that like I said, can be found on the Fundamentals book but in an easy to read style, even with exercises so you can evaluate your own skills.

Chapter #4 is probably the more interesting chapter of the whole book, is about query performance. I must accept Itzik dominates the material but introduces so many complex query concepts and statements that you will get lost in no time. He even mentions he wasn't so sure about where to put this chapter, end of beginning, because the way he's using complex DMVs. But I believe you still can explain query performance without being so technical. This chapter is just full of complex query techniques that make even more complex the explanation of performance tuning strategies. I prefer SQL Server 2008 Query Performance Tuning Distilled by Grant Fritchey; a book just dedicated for that topic but delightful and easy to follow, without being a "dummy book".

In order to be fair and make justice though, the book is really full of theory about logical query processing, set theory and algorithms, foundations of what SQL language is. If you have a really strong background of TSQL query (I mean, really strong TSQL skills), math and the enough time to digest and understand that, this book is for you.

But to me, this book can be out of your book shelve and be easily replaced by this combo instead: SQL Server 2008 Query Performance Tuning Distilled+Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals (same author) Both will teach the same in a better and easy to follow approach, skipping all the logic, math and boring sql language foundation which to me, are unnecessary on this kind of books especially if you are not in college anymore, but working as a full time DBA.

I have really enjoyed this book from the begining to the end.

The new chapters from Steve and Dejan:

- Set Theory and Predicate Logic
- Algorithms and Complexity
- The Relational Model

are a very good complement. Having these topics is handy and refreshing, not to mention a must in this discipline.

Itzik's cover about the new T-SQL features introduced with SQL Server 2008, is insightful and very well guided. No doubt that he is an educator by nature.

If you are new to T-SQL, I strongly recommend that you first read Itzik's book "Microsoft� SQL Server� 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals", prior to diving into this series (T-SQL Querying and T-SQL Programming).

Thanks to all the authors for such wonderful book.

Expert knowledge and outstanding organization. More lucid writing needed.

Sometimes, the authors of technical books have the prerequisite expert knowledge and have an outstanding organization and game plan. But their writing is just too ambiguous. This is one of those books. The author should simply get to the point and not meander too much.

First, this book is not for the beginners. Indeed, you may not need all the knowledge contained in this book to be even intermediate DBA or DB Developer. But if you want to raise your knowledge of MS SQL to an expert level, a book like this sure helps. It is really too bad the author can't be more forthright in his writing.

Pros:
1)Expert in how MS SQL processes transactions.
2)Outstanding organization.
3)Comprehensive explanation of T-SQL.
4)If you want to understanding SQL performance tuning, this book is a must.

Cons:
1)Not for the beginners.
2)Writing could be far more lucid.

About the Author
Lydia Mihelic Pulsipher is a cultural-historical geographer who studies the landscapes of ordinary people through the lens of geography. She has contributed to several geography-related exhibits at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., including "Seeds of Change," which featured her research in the eastern Caribbean on human adaptation to the Neo-troics in the post-Columbian period, including the present. She and her graduate students have also looked at cultural geography and national/ethnic identity issues in the new Central European members of the European Union, and at the impact of tourism development on traditional landscapes in these countries. In January, 2009, Dr. Pulsipher was awarded the Preston E. James Eminent Latin Americanist Career Award, by the Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers, for work on the cultural and environmental geography of the Eastern Caribbean and Latin America, and public outreach through collaborations with the Smithsonian Institution and the Seeds of Change exhibit. �Alex A. Pulsipher�is an independent scholar in�Knoxville,�TN,�focusing on�urban development, sustainability, and global environmental change.� In the early 1990s, Alex spent some time in South Asia working for a development research center and then went on to do an undergraduate thesis on the history of Hindu nationalism at Wesleyan University.� Beginning in 1995, Alex worked full time on the research and writing of the first edition of�World Regional Geography.� In 1999 and 2000, he traveled to South America, Southeast Asia, and�South Asia, where he collected information for the second edition of�World Regional Geography�and for the website.� In 2000 and 2001, he returned to writing material and designing maps for the second edition. �In 2010, he earned a masters degree in Geography from�Clark�University, where he studied the diffusion of green technologies in the context of environmental change.

Intuitive-Hilarious-A must read!

As an avid UFC and Forrest Griffin fan, I finally bought this book after much contemplation. I wasn't sure what to expect and boy was I in for a surprise. I have a dry sense of humor and this book despite a detailed rundown of techniques and tips, I laughed so hard throughout this book. There is no room for boredom in this book. I wish my college textbooks were this much fun to read. Forrest is a master in print as well as in the octagon. I went on to buying another of his books because I'm his biggest reading fan now!

Forrest Griffin is insane and hilarious

Literally made me LOL many times, which I don't think any other book has ever done to me. I'm struggling to decide who I would suggest this to... anyone who is mildly into/following MMA - you will love it and find it hilarious and it's a MUST read for sure. Anyone not into MMA at all, I actually think you'd still enjoy it. There's just so many crazy stories and just funny real life lessons. And Big John contributes, and is part of the funniest part of the book.

It's just so raw and brutally honest, Forrest Griffin is insane and hilarious.

Inspiring and Hilarious

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book. I bought while looking for books on inspiration, but expected it to be more comical given the title and seeing that there was another Griffin book on how to survive the apocalypse.

This book rocked my world. I was looking stupid as hell standing in the chow line laughing as loud as I was. This book will keep you entertained. I generally like to drag my books out over the course of at least a week, because I never know when the next one will get to my ship, but I read this one in about two days; though for a serious reader, it probably wouldn't take that long.

Aside from being a nice change of pace and keeping me in good spirits while I was reading it, the book was inspiring since I like to think that I might one day be able to pursue a career in fighting, and I just think it's fun. Lots of good advice and good stories.

Even if you don't give a rats arse about fighting, I still recommend this book. It's a fun read.
