About the Author
Dr Jerrry Miller holds a Doctor of Social Work degree from the Catholic University of America. In 1968, he became Associate Professor of Social Work at Ohio State University. He was subsequently appointed to the cabinet of Massachusetts Republican Governor Frank Sargent in 1969 to head the newly created Massachusetts Department of Youth Services and has also served on the gubernatorial staff of Milton Shapp, former governor of Pennsylvania. In 1977, he founded the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives (NCIA), a non-profit organization to set up alternative plans for youth and adults otherwise institutionalized in reform schools, prisons, mental hospitals and state institutions for the developmentally disabled. He has been consultant to the U.S. Justice Department, evaluating juvenile and adult institutions in more than 30 states, and has served as a special master for a number of federal judges. He has assisted in developing mitigative studies for individuals on death row in numerous states. He continues to see individuals clinically and is presently finishing a manuscript on the issue of sex offenders in our society and the 'moral panic' in which modern industrial societies are caught up. His articles dealing with the topics of this book have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times and the Washington Post.

Also present and accounted-for are Stewartian showpieces like Mocha-Pistachio Wedding Cake.

The greatest virtue of the book, apart from the clarity of its recipes, lies in its organization: the chapters, which cover all baking stops, begin with relevant tips, followed by notes on equipment and techniques, all photo-illustrated. The recipes include 42 different cookies and 30 cakes, plus pies, tarts, coffee cakes, scones, biscuits, muffins, crackers, bread, fine pastries and more. They range from Classic Apple Pie to twists on standards, like a Tarte Tatin that involves cooking the apples entirely in the oven (instead of on the stovetop) and international goodies like Torta della Nonna. Instructions and sidebars are exhaustive yet accessible. Naturally, the book is exquisitely designed, with beautiful food styling and the spare, closeup photography that's become a hallmark of Stewart publications. This new volume may add to global warming as cooks all over the country start up their ovens to produce the extraordinary baked goods that Stewart proposes. Few of Stewart's recipes are completely original. Martha's genius rests in her uncanny ability to see a recipe in a novel way. Thus, her roulade has a filling of blackberry fool. Pineapple upside-down cake replaces the pineapple's core with mango. Caramel sticks cover the multiple chocolate layers of Dobos Torte. Rather than the little slices of banana customary inside ordinary banana cream pie, Stewart employs dramatic lengthwise slices. In addition to quick breads, Stewart offers yeast-raised loaves and buns, including focaccia, English muffins, croissants, and Danish pastries. Stewart's cookie recipes yield products suitable for gift giving. Illustrations throughout offer some guidance to the perplexed baker, but some recipes, such as the sfogliatelle, almost demand personal, step-by-step treatment. This is not an in-depth treatise on any one particular facet of the baker's art, but what Stewart chooses to deal with, she unfolds with care, grace, aplomb, and total mastery. Mark Knoblauch

Invaluable All-Purpose Baking Resource

I've owned this book for a bit over a year, and it has quickly become one of my favorite baking books (Believe me, I own quite a few). The recipes run the gamut from simple breakfast muffins to rustic cobblers to elegant napoleons. There is even a recipe for a three-tiered wedding cake! Some recipes are quick and easy, while others tend to be very complex and involved, offering options for both the novice and advanced home baker, and allowing the user to grow with the book, trying more difficult recipes as one's skills expand. However, even the most complex of the recipes are laid out and explained clearly. In addition, there are beautiful photos on nearly every page (and most pages have more than one!), showing both finished baked goods and illustrating techniques.

I've made quite a few of the recipes in this book and thought I'd share a few of my favorites. There are four cupcake recipes in this book, of which I've tried three. The Maple-Walnut Cupcakes with Maple Buttercream (p. 164) are really excellent. Make more candied walnuts than cupcakes - you'll just want to grab a handful and munch on them while you're garnishing. The Carrot-Ginger Cupcakes (p. 166) were really light and fluffy, although they very mild and not all that carrot cake-y, so that may not be to everyone's taste. But the instructions for making marzipan carrots (with photos!) make them so easy. I've made the One-Bowl Chocolate Cake on p. 168 as both cupcakes and a layer cake, and it's a great go-to basic chocolate cake recipe. The Marble Cake with White Chocolate Glaze (p. 65) is super easy yet impressive - the perfect thing to have with coffee when a friend stops over.

Martha's Classic Apple Pie recipe (p. 228) is simple and excellent, and her Pate Brisee (p. 224) is my go-to recipe for pie dough - it works every time. The Tarte Tatin (p. 265) is about as easy as a "company" dessert can get, looking both rustic and fancy at the same time (and it tastes amazing - like candied apples on pie crust; how could you go wrong?) I've made the Fruit Curd Tartlets (p. 258) with both lemon and lime curd (both on p. 390), and while the tartlet molds I used were really small (about 1" - don't do it to yourself!!!) and a huge pain in my [...], everyone loved them and they were gone in a flash.

This book makes even difficult, pastry chef-caliber techniques like laminated doughs accessible. I made the from-scratch Puff Pastry on p. 359, and while it took the better part of a day and used a crapload of butter, the difference from frozen, pre-packaged puff pastry was so amazing that I don't ever want to buy it again. I also tried my hand at the Danish Dough (p. 334), and made the Prune Pinwheels and Apricot Bow Ties (p. 336 & 338, respectively). The absolute winner of the book, though, is the Chocolate Babka on p. 352. Coming from a Russian/Polish Jewish background, I've eaten a lot of babkas, but this one was PERFECT. Loaded with chocolate, covered in streusel.... you need to try it. Granted, the recipe calls for 2 rises and with several different components it takes a bit of time to complete, but it also makes three loaves and they freeze beautifully. Eat one, store the other two in the freezer, and you'll have something perfect to bring to a potluck or housewarming at a moment's notice.

The Kindle version is disappointing

The Kindle version of the book is very disappointing. A book on baking needs to be beautiful and the Kindle version definitely misses the mark. Whether that's due to limitations in the platform or is the fault of whoever converted the book is hard to tell. If you're going to buy this book definitely get it in paper form!

Fun, fun, fun!

Every child I know - my students, my children, my nieces and nephews - loves this book. The repetive refrain is perfect for beginning readers and the rhythm of the language engages young readers immediately. Your child will want to hear the story over and over. Non-readers will make up their own story but the refrain is easy and fun for them to remember and "read".

Rhythmic, Colorful Fun for Children

In this title, Patricia Hubbard uses rhythm and fun to introduce colors. Children are quickly reciting the repetitive refrains with smiles on their faces as this book is introduced. G. Brian Karas' illustrations are colorful and imaginative providing good visualizations to Hubbard's imaginative, colorful ideas. The book uses a familiar crayon box to describe things that can be seen or drawn with each color. Preschoolers through beginning elementary school children love this book!

About the Author
J. Preston Eby was born into a Mennonite family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. While still a toddler his parents received the baptism in the Holy Spirit through the witness of some Pentecostal brethren in the area. They were led of the Lord to sell their business and move to Alabama to do missionary work. In his twelfth year Preston was filled with the Spirit – and in that same year the Holy Spirit sovereignly unfolded to his understanding the wonderful truth of the reconciliation of all things and all men unto God. No one else around him – in family or church associations – embraced this revelation. Through those early years he kept this truth to himself and pondered it in his heart. Later he came into contact with, and was touched by, a mighty move of the Spirit known as the "Latter Rain", with emphasis on the body of Christ, gifts of the Spirit, laying on of hands, impartation, five-fold ministry, prophetic ministry, spiritual worship, the kingdom of God, and going on to perfection, unto fullness of sonship to God. The Lord pressed him into a deeper walk with Him, intensifying within his heart the truths of sonship and the kingdom of God, already planted within as seed through the visitation of the Lord as Latter Rain. Along the way he became associated with brother Gerald Derstine and The Gospel Crusade in Sarasota, Florida, serving as an associate minister with him for eight years, first co-pastoring and later pastoring the Revival Tabernacle in that city. His wife Lorain and he, with their family, were on the mission field in Latin America for a total of five years, with ministry in several other areas as well. For seven years, following this, he was an elder in a fellowship of believers in El Paso, Texas where they witnessed a precious move of the Spirit and a body of saints flowing together in the liberty and life of the Spirit. Eventually the Lord led him into a full-time writing ministry directed to those who are called and chosen as elect of God to grow up into the full stature of Jesus Christ as sons of God

About the Author
Carl MaultsBy holds degrees in Jazz/Commercial Composition, Music, and Mathematics. He is the Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, New York, and Music Associate at St. Philips Episcopal Church in Harlem. In 2001 he was one of thirteen composers who received a commission by the Fromm Music Foundation of Harvard University. In 2002 he was inducted into the African Music Hall of Fame. MaultsBy has conducted choirs for the Harry Belafonte World Tours and the 2001 Conference of the Association of Anglican Musicians, and he is the founder and Executive Artistic Director of Rejoicensemble!, a not-for-profit chamber vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance, preservation, and development of African American sacred music and to developing and showcasing the works of contemporary African American composers.

Fantastic arrangements!

This book is fantastic! It has some of the most authentic gospel music arrangements that I have encountered. I grew up in the Baptist church and the arrangements are just like the ones that the musicians played. I am classically trained and could not get the hang of playing gospel music. I also could not find teachers who could transmit the style in a way that I could understand. I highly recommend this book if you want to play some of the gospel standards in the "traditional gospel style".

While Rune Magic is an awesome book I highly suggest you check out Pennick’s book, Complete Illustrated Guide to Runes. Not only is it a more mature book than Rune Magic, it’s also more concise and illustrated with hundreds of beautiful images and drawings. While Rune Magic has more depth on the magical aspects of the Runes it’s marginal compared to the key points both books share.

The fact that many authors have borrowed from Pennick shows his importance in modern Rune history. As to his particular approach I would say he’s a fusionist. He does honor tradition by giving the reader the traditional associations and correspondences for the Runes while at the same time adding his own. Some of his influences are Shamanism, the Celtic Tradition, and Continental Occultism.

An example of his personal correspondences for Wunjo are:
Numerical Meaning: Balance
Color: Yellow
Plant: Flax
Tree: Ash
Essential Oil: Marigold
Element: Earth
Polarity: Male
Time of Day: 19:30-20:30
Month: October 13th

While I do not connect with some of his correspondences I did find some fruitful to meditate on. All-in-all Rune Magic is a good book. If you have the money I would say go ahead and get both books. If on the other hand you are strapped for money I highly suggest you get his Illustrated Guide to Runes for the reasons I stated in the beginning of my review.

Not your ususal 'cookbook' of runic divination.

In these pages Nigel Pennick not only gives you the history of all the known rune rows with their divinitory meanings, but adds in correspondences to Northern Deities, colors, trees, herbs, numerology, etc. Practical uses of runes such as sigils and bindrunes are also covered. Be aware though that this book was reissued by Thorsons in 1995 with the title "Secrets of the Runes". This is a really good book. It explores the runes and thier magick well, though if your just starting out, I'd wait until you've got a basic understanding first. I started with this book and found it to be a little confusing, but it is a must have for any collection.
