About the Author

Scott Empson is the chair of the Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology degree program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he teaches Cisco routing, switching, network design, and leadership courses in a variety of different programs (certificate, diploma, and applied degree) at the postsecondary level. Scott is also the program coordinator of the Cisco Networking Academy Program at NAIT, an area support center for the province of Alberta. He has a Masters of Education degree along with three undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in English; a Bachelor of Education, again with a major in English/Language Arts; and a Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology, with a major in Network Management. He currently holds several industry certifications, including CCNP, CCDP, CCAI, CEH, and Network+. Before instructing at NAIT, he was a junior/senior high school English/Language Arts/Computer Science teacher at different schools throughout Northern Alberta. Scott lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with his wife, Trina, and two children, Zach and Shae.

Patrick Gargano has been a Cisco Networking Academy Instructor since 2000. He currently heads the Networking Academy program and teaches CCNA/CCNP-level courses at Coll�ge La Cit� in Ottawa, Canada, where he has successfully introduced mastery-based learning and gamification into his teaching. In 2013 and 2014, Patrick led the Cisco Networking Academy student “Dream Team,” which deployed the wired and wireless networks for attendees of the Cisco Live conferences in the United States. Hans Roth is an instructor in the Electrical Engineering Technology department at Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. CCNP Routing and Switching - Portable Command Guide

I like Portable guides, I like that they are small and shove a bunch of useful information in them. The book is great; 14 chapters from Basic to Campus security.

Each Chapter is its own subject, so the spanning of multiple chapters you won’t find. Chapters 1 - 7 are Routing based and provide commands from implementing to hardening. There are examples, pictures, and troubleshooting tips.

The book is perfect for me, in that has become part of my reference material. With the "Create Your Own Journal Here" section, I have written notes pertaining to my networks and I like that. Yes I am a tech guy, but I still use my mechanical pencil.

Uwe Timm was only two years old when in 1942 his older brother, Karl Heinz, announced to his family he had volunteered for service with an elite squadron of the German army, the SS Totenkopf Division, also known as Death's Heads. Little more than a year later Karl Heinz was injured in battle at the Russian front, his legs amputated, and a few weeks after that he died in a military hospital. To their father, Karl Heinz's death only served to immortalize him as the courageous one, the obedient one, the one who upheld the family honor. His childhood was marked by the mythology of his brother's lost life; his absence-the hole he left in the family-just as palpable as if he were still alive. His mother's sadness and his father's rage over the loss of Karl Heinz ultimately defined Uwe's relationship with his parents. A memoir not of a brother but of his absence from the author's life and family, Timm's book revolves around memory--of how traces of his brother, an SS corporal killed in Russia in 1943, are tied up with aspects of WWII that still remain unspeakable for many Germans. Timm was two when his brother Karl-Heinz enlisted, at age 18. Using diary entries from a book Karl-Heinz kept at the front, family recollections and his own experience growing up without his brother, Timm works through, beautifully, his sense of an unknowable figure who, 60 years later, continues to loom large in his consciousness. At the same time, a good deal of the book goes toward unpacking the ways in which national identity informs personal identity; Timm digs into what it meant then (and means now) to have had a brother, or son, in the SS. Timm's novel The Invention of Curried Sausage was set during WWII, and this book is informed by a deep understanding of its horrors, anxieties and legacies. The translation is lyrical if occasionally awkward ("In the coffee break I went to the lavatory"); the whole compellingly scales a nation's failure down to the level of a nuclear family.

Timm's reputation as a gifted literary portrait artist is by now well established outside of his native Germany, and his narratives of moral (and occasionally existential) ambiguity have likewise frequently transcended geographical and historical circumstance. His latest book, ostensibly a memoir of his older brother, an SS soldier killed on the Russian front, dares to be as anthropologically illuminating as it is intimate. Praised by their father for his bravery, Karl Heinz was the boy who told no lies, was always upright, shed no tears. His war diary, a quiet testament to the banality of evil that speaks matter-of-factly of combat but only alludes to "the cruel things that sometimes happen," only intensifies Timm's curiosity. A stubborn father and survivor mother, shadows in their own ways, are portrayed tenderly but without much sentiment; their presence rounds out this book's philosophical exploration of courage in its various manifestations. Forbidden door, not opened

Uwe Timm was born in Hamburg in 1940. When he was 3, his 19 y old brother died fighting in the Ukraine. The brother had been a soldier in a tank unit of the Waffen SS, in the infamous Totenkopf Division. Naturally, Timm has hardly any own recollections of his brother. What he has are his parents' tales about the brother, then the brother's letters and a small diary, covering half a year of the Russian campaign in 1943. The diary is partly included in the text. It gives only minimal information.

The subject is a difficult one for Timm. He dares to approach it openly only after his parents and elder sister have died. The book was first published in 2003. Timm compares his shying away from the subject to Blaubart's wife's hesitations in opening the forbidden door. He has the brother's diary and he has the official records of the division's campaign. He wants to compare. Does he dare? After the thrilling Blaubart picture in the early pages, I expected a serious exposure to the horror and analysis of its conditions. It never comes.

This non-fiction book, which is oddly called a novel in the Wikipedia entry on Timm, is more about the author himself and about his parents as it is about the brother. Father was a militarist, clearly. He had been in WW1 and then a `Freikorps' fighter in the Baltic states after WW1. He joined the Wehrmacht again for WW2. The family was deep into Nazi culture. The brother was father's apple of the eye. That is not the least important facet in Timm's memoirs. Mother was a loyal trooper, never second guessing father. Much of the book deals with the family business and its rise and failure after the war. Father's decay and death, mother's never-ending nostalgia for her son. Reconstruction and rearmament in West Germany. Collective guilt debates. The different approach in the East, where all explanations were pushed to the class struggle corner.

Why did the 18 y old brother join the SS, as a volunteer? Mother's explanation was: out of `idealism'. That is an essential category in understanding the attitude of many Nazis and sympathizers. It is a success story of brainwashing propaganda. Not all Nazis were primitives or cynics or fearful underlings who either knew or didn't care that their actions were criminal and immoral. Some, maybe many, had been duped into shedding normal human standards of morality. That is scary. It makes dictatorships more successful than could ever be achieved by pure violent state terror.

Who is Uwe Timm? A respected and successful German writer, with a tendency to the left. More a solid craftsman, not a lost genius (like Koeppen), nor an intellectual maverick (like Enzensberger), nor a great talent (like Erpenbeck). Also not a pompous old star of the literary circus, like Grass, nor an overrated taboo-buster like Schlink.

What has the solid craftsman given us? Timm had precious little material about his brother. Alas, he does not succeed in drawing much out of the little he had. His memories of family life are interesting, but not that unusual, and not particularly well told. The book title is an overstatement, it promises more than it can deliver. The original title is something like ` the example of my brother'. I find that as misleading as Anthea Bell's title version with the shadow. Which example, which shadow? The subtitle in the English version is dishonestly misleading: there is very little about 'a life and death in the SS' here.
The book is disappointing because Timm has promised more than he could deliver. There is a lack of focus on the book's promised subject. It is not a stupid book, but an incomplete one.

great book

I was born and raised in Germany. Even though my parents were born after the war and both my grandfathers were dead by the time I started asking questions I can still relate very well to the unease when it comes to talking about WWII.

Where I grew up we had a neighbour whom I only knew as a mild mannered older guy, who loved us kids, would give us sweets and let us play in the big old trees in his garden. At one point I discovered that he was a member of the SS in WWII and had fought somewhere in Russia. He had no family. When he was in his eighties, he started opening up to a few people in the neighbourhood, among them my family. He would talk about the war, his comrades and generally the hard life they lived. He would always start crying. He would never mention fighting, killing civilians and all the other things he most likely saw and did. We all knew about those things, but we also felt sorry for the old guy and nobody pressed questions. He was a neighbour, not close family after all.

Timm's book perfectly captures the conflict of the - very normal - desire to love and admire a brother (father, uncle, grandfather, neighbour) while at the same time knowing that that person must have consciously participated in something unspeakably atrocious.

Obviously there is no easy solution and that conflict is one that generations of Germans had to deal with after the war. It is impossible to excuse what happened, but it is equally impossible to condemn all these people around you who all might have participated to various degrees, and be it just by keeping silent.

One of those books that leaves you wanting more at the end

Mythology can be confusing and complex but still this author hits it outta the park. An absolute joy to read I looked forward to it every time with excitement and was sad when I read the last story. Her explanations are clear and without embellishment giving you a simply great depiction of ancient Greece and what life must have been like when these stories were most popular. The end section about Norse mythology was just as awesome though sadly only a few stories long. I like also that at the beginning of each story she tells you from which ancient poet she is basing her adaption on and why, she explains the different styles of the Greek and Roman poets and how its relevant to the telling of the story. Not only that but she explains the symbolism behind characters like Hercules and Thesis and why they did the things they did. Fantastic and I would love to read more of her work and I can't wait to read this to my children one day for bed time stories!

Excellent collection of mythological stories.

Although it's difficult to give an accurate review of such a large book with so many different stories, overall Edith Hamilton's Mythology deserves five stars. For a discussion on the myths within this book, please skip down to the capitalized section.

The effort put into this book is tremendous. It is quite obvious by her writing the Ms. Hamilton has dedicated plenty of time to this work. Although not all works which have been worked on for so long are necessarily successul, this one is.

The book mainly covers Greek and Roman mythology, with a small section of Norse mythology at the end. As there are at least two different names for each god and goddess due to the difference between the Greek and Roman myths, the stories can get a bit confusing. Yet Ms. Hamilton does her best to aid us in understanding. The work begins with an introduction to mythology section which describes certain gods and goddesses, as well as the history of mythology. As stated, these parts may be confusing since there are usually a Roman and Greek name for each important figure.

THE STORIES THEMSELVES. The myths themselves are told excellently by Hamilton. She offers views from many different sources, often choosing the best source for each story (or each particular part of a story). As myths differ from writer to writer, you may find that the version of one myth is different from the version Hamilton tells. This is expected. However, Ms. Hamilton does an excellent job telling the myths as best she can, especially considering the amount of myths she tells in the book.

The only complaint I have of this book is the fact that some myths that I consider important only receive a few pages in the book, while less important myths (in my opinion) have several pages dedicated to them. Another example of this is the presence of such myths that I thought were important in the 'less important myths' section.

Overall, this is a good overview of mythology and is definitely recommended. If you are planning a trip to Greece anytime, I suggest picking this up as it will help explain the significance of many places within Greece that you may end up visiting.

Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY will give you a good overview of the Greek Gods and heroes as well as a smattering of some of the great writers of Greek and Roman culture, Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Ovid, as well as others. The book will also validate the contention that if God did not exist, man would have invented him. The Greek gods are portrayed with human foibles: jealousy, anger, trickery. No god was all-powerful. Zeus, for instance, is depicted as being fallible in many ways. Hera was constantly getting the best of him.
When Hamilton turns to the Greek heroes, we once again see how these characters were fashioned according to prevailing value system. Theseus shuns the kingdom of Athens for that of commander-in-chief. He wants to people to be free. We see him in action when the Athenians invade Thebes to force them to bury the five remaining champions who had died trying to elevate Polyneices to Oedipus's vacated thrown. When the King of Argos asks for his help, he calls an assembly to decide. When they conquer the city, he will not let his soldiers sack the city, insisting that the army came only to bury the dead. He then prepares the bodies for burial with his own hands.
Two of the most interesting of the gods are Dionysus and Demeter, the two gods most concerned with humanity. Hamilton uses them to show how winter came about. Demeter's daughter Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, God of the Underworld. When Demeter brought blight to the world, Zeus negotiated a deal whereby for a third of the year Persephone would live in the underworld. In Dionysus's case winter is that time of the year when the God of the Vine was pruned, only the bare stalk remaining. In the springtime, he would revive. He was the assurance that death does not end all. His worshippers believed that his death and resurrection showed that the soul lives on forever after the body dies.
In the last two chapters, Hamilton turns to Norse mythology. The most fascinating thing about them is that they were so fatalistic. The Gods knew that in the end evil would win out and they would be destroyed. The most important thing to the Norse was that they show courage in the face of death.

Interesting; should entice those who think they don't like stats

Yes, there are lots of "dear reader" type comments throughout the book. Yes, the examples and references are drawn from up-to-the-minute pop culture. And, yes, if you don't know very much about statistics and probability you can learn fairly "painlessly" in this book.

One drawback: you really, really need to read the entire book from start to finish to really understand all of the concepts. This is not a reference book in which you can "jump around" or just go to the parts you have questions about.

It's like being given a prescription for antibiotics; you really need to read every chapter in the book, to "take it all." Concepts build on previous chapters, up to the final chapter. Don't stop or you will miss out!

On the other hand, this is not a book for someone who wants to quickly, at-a-glance understand probability or who wants to get a solid definition of any statistical concept, such as confidence level or regression analysis. It is not specifically a reference book.

I confess, my prejudice is for more concise information without all the "fluff." On the other hand, I work with opinion survey statistics almost every day of my worklife, so I don't need to be lured in with tales of baseball (in which I have no interest) or discussions of what's behind the doors in Let's Make a Deal. (In fact, I have never, ever seen that show.)

However, if you are in business or education or health care and don't have a complete grasp of statistics, I recommend you read this book. If you want to better understand whether you should buy a lottery ticket or buy insurance and you don't understand probability theory, I recommend this book to you. If you read media and want to have a better understanding of polls, scientific experiments, clinical trials and don't understand statistics, then I recommend this book to you.

If this book piques your interest in the topics, I suggest you next obtain a couple of the more traditional, "duller" stat books that you can use as handy references for specific concepts. Of course, if you already have that much interest in stats, you probably already have those books. Or you know where to go online to find reference materials.

There are a few tiny, tiny little things that could have been better. I think he could have included the "name" for symbols, such as sigma when he first introduced them. Also, I don't like the way he would "jump" back and forth on examples.

Overall, I recommend this book.

"Statistics is like a high caliber gun, very useful in the right hands but potentially disastrous if misused"

This book will not teach you the mathematics behind statistics. This book is about making you understand what you are doing when you are doing statistics. Thus it is a great complement to a university course where you might learn how to plug in numbers in SPSS or MATLAB and get a p-value but don't really understand the assumptions involved and the potential pitfalls that must be considered.
Though I have studied some statistics at university level this book still provided a fresh valuable perspective on many statistical issues. It also gives examples of many, often costly mistakes scientists made in the past using statistics.

The analogy I used in the title (taken from this book), really captures an important aspect of statistics. If used properly statistics can tell us if a medication, or a certain policy is effective. If used improperly, it can lead to erroneous medical advice with fatal consequences, in the literal sense.

I would recommend this book if you are taking statistics but often don't know what you are really doing or how what you are doing relates to real life issues. Alternatively, this book can also be read by people who don't know any statistics but want to understand what it is all about without having to learn to do the actual math. If you are already an advanced student in statistics and know what you are doing (and know what not to do), then this book might not be for you.

The Only Explanation of the Monty Hall Problem I Have Actually Understood

It was worth the price of the book for this alone. All these years I have read and listened to various explanations of the Monty Hall problem, in which a contestant is given the choice of what is behind one of three doors. Behind two doors there are goats, behind one door there's a new car. The contestant chooses Door #1 and Monty Hall, the host of the game show, opens Door #2, revealing a goat. Then he asks the contestant if she wants to change her choice. The intuitive answer is that it makes no difference, but the correct answer is that she should switch. I could never understand why, but author Charles Wheelan has finally convinced me once and for all.

The rest of the book is also good, although I could do without the many sports examples, which were not enlightening since they required knowing (and caring) more about sports than I do. (What is a passer rating, anyway?)

Wheelan explains concepts clearly and tells why statistics and probability matter. So even, if like Wheelan, you never warmed to calculus, you can still exercise your math muscles and decide for yourself whether the latest poll or alarming statistic is credible or just another goat behind the door.

Not intimidating to new cultural anthropology students

There is little wasted space in this book. It is to the point. This brevity for me was ideal, but for some readers, perhaps they need more examples. For use in a classroom setting, this is an especially useful work if used in conjunction with a readings from cultural anthropology text such as "Conformity and Conflict." The two complement each other very well. More specifically, I found the latter part of MFH especially interesting-- the chapters dealing with gender, the world system, and stratification. MFH should not only appeal to those within the field of cultural anthropology but also should draw the attention of students working within the sister disciplines of history and sociology.

What's not to love ! NOT your average cookbook. MUST HAVE! ❤️

I don't know how anyone could give this book less than 5 stars. I would give it a million stars if I could. I have been following Lindsay'a blog for a couple years now. So far, all the recipes I made from her blog have been awesome. Her ice box cakes are off the chain. Sooooo easy and no bake. The pictures in this book are simply georgeous. I personally like cookbooks with lots of pictures so I know what the final product looks like. There is a picture with every single recipe in her book. I'm not a beginner baker. In fact, I have been baking for 40 years. This is a cookbook for all levels of bakers. Her recipes are on point. We all like to tweak recipes to make it fit our taste. With Lindsay's, I never have to. It's ALWAYS on point. Well done, Lindsay ! You have done an awesome job. Can't wait to make some of these sweet treats ! ❤️

Cakes so beautiful, you'll want to eat the book!

I have had the good fortune to work with Lindsay and to be a "taste tester" of many different cakes. (A tough job, but someone has to do it!) They are ALL gorgeous and delicious. And the pictures of the cakes in this book will make you ponder whether you can eat the book! :) Lindsay sweats all the details in taste and presentation, so you don't have to. A perfect gift for the baker in your life!

We just used Lindsay's recipes to bake two birthday cakes, and they were fantastic! The recipes were easy to understand, and her explanations for how to decorate were so clear and helpful. I had never made a cheesecake before, but it turned out deliciously, thanks to her helpful tips.

The other thing I love about this cookbook is the gorgeous photos. They are inspiring to view.

For those with kids, this cookbook is a surprising hit, too. My crew loves looking through it, and the 10 y.o. is the one who did the decorating, following Lindsay's great instructions.

We can't wait to make more items from the book and her blog.

About the Author
Marty Brounstein is the Principal of The Practical Solutions Group, a training and consulting firm based in the San Francisco Bay area that specializes in management and organizational effectiveness. Marty's consulting work includes one-on-one coaching with managers and executives, assistance to groups working to become productive teams, and guidance and direction for organizations establishing practices for high performance and employee retention. His training programs target management as well as employee-development issues including leadership, team development, customer service, and effective communication.

As a consultant, speaker, and trainer since 1991, Marty has served a wide variety of organizations from high tech to government, for profit to not-for-profit. He has a bachelor's degree in education and history and a master's degree in industrial relations. Prior to beginning his consulting career, he spent a couple of years as a human resources executive.

This is Marty's fourth book and second for Hungry Minds, Inc. He is the coauthor of Effective Recruiting Strategies: A Marketing Approach and author ofHandling the Difficult Employee: Solving Performance Problems. In 2000, he wrote Coaching and Mentoring For Dummies.

Useful text

I have used this as a textbook for the advanced communications class I teach, and have come to appreciate it - especially the information on conflict resolution. Not everyting was applicable for my purposes but I recommend this book without hesitation.
