Rise and Fall of the American Medical Empire: A Trench Doctor's View of the Past, Present, and Future of the U.S. Healthcare System, by Ro

There are four major dilemmas at work in the rapid decline of the United States' healthcare system: the disappearing primary care sector, healthcare insurance reform, the influence of the pharmaceutical industry on the practice of medicine, and reform of malpractice litigation. In The Rise and Fall of the American Medical Empire, Dr. Robert A. Linden provides a comprehensive, straightforward explanation of these four dilemmas, from the perspective of a primary care physician who has spent 30 years working directly with patients and seeing first-hand how changes in the system have impacted patients and physicians. Dr. Linden sorts out the fragments of information that most readers get through the media and fills in the blanks to provide a full, clear picture of what's wrong with the U.S. healthcare system, an impartial review of proposed solutions, and a look at what several other countries have done to reform their healthcare systems. Unlike the many academic authors of previous books that have covered the problems only in part and skewed information toward their own agendas, this book will help you understand the problems we face and form your own assessments of what should be done to restore the American healthcare system.

Trench Doctor's view of health care
By James A. Brennan Jr.
In the midst of our national health care emergency, Dr. Robert Linden has produced a book that tackles the critical issues head-on from the front line vantage point of a personal care physician who has spent the last thirty years working directly with his patients. If you are curious about the drugs you are taking, the health insurance policy your company offers, the explosion of health care premiums, malpractice claims or the dearth of doctors in primary care, this book is a must read. If you are wondering why your congressman and senator seem to flail about hopelessly in a vain search for a system other countries have already successfully implemented, Dr. Linden gives a detailed look at the UK, France, Taiwan, Canada, the Netherlands and what the US can learn from each. He shows what works, what doesn't and how our leaders can reform the present system to meet the health care needs of our citizens. When you are done reading the book, send it on to your congressman. It may be our only hope of enacting successful health care reform!

Real Health Care Policy Answers
By Peter Tavino
Sunrise River Press has produced a gem of a book with The Rise and Fall of the American Medical Empire. It is refreshing to have a Primary Care Physician share his forty years of experience and knowledge with such eloquent writing style. The in depth descriptions of today's pharmaceutical and insurance industries taught me much in a short time. There are clear views into the worlds of hospitals, medical schools, malpractice litigation, and government programs, both here and abroad. Were a calamity to strike my family or me, I can now make intelligent protocol decisions. Perhaps our elected officials will study this informative work, and direct our future health care to the more sustainable and practical application of medicine, which Dr. Linden so aptly prescribes.

A MUST READ FOR THOSE ENTERING MEDICINE
By Alan Cohen
Dr.Linden's "Rise and Fall..." is a must read for anyone concerned about the future of medicine and primary care in the United States,in particular for those entering the profession and contemplating a career in Internal Medicine or Family Practice. As a general Internist, whose started a solo practice in 1976 when a well trained Internist was an Intensivist and consultant to General Surgeons,Ob-Gyns,Orthopods,and G.P.s,I find that Dr. Linden very accurately covers the same issues that I have observed , experienced and read about over the last 34 years ,that have drastically changed the role of the General Internist. This book is extremely well written, accurate, well footnoted and informative and will ring true for any physician who reads it.I will be sending copies to my 2 daughters at Einstein and Dartmouth Med Schools."

Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, by Sally Bedell Smith

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The life and loves of Prince Charles are illuminated in a major new biography from the New York Times bestselling author of Elizabeth the Queen—perfect for fans of The Crown.

Sally Bedell Smith returns once again to the British royal family to give us a new look at Prince Charles, the oldest heir to the throne in more than three hundred years. This vivid, eye-opening biography—the product of four years of research and hundreds of interviews with palace officials, former girlfriends, spiritual gurus, and more, some speaking on the record for the first time—is the first authoritative treatment of Charles’s life that sheds light on the death of Diana, his marriage to Camilla, and his preparations to take the throne one day.

Prince Charles brings to life the real man, with all of his ambitions, insecurities, and convictions. It begins with his lonely childhood, in which he struggled to live up to his father’s expectations and sought companionship from the Queen Mother and his great-uncle Lord Mountbatten. It follows him through difficult years at school, his early love affairs, his intellectual quests, his entrepreneurial pursuits, and his intense search for spiritual meaning. It tells of the tragedy of his marriage to Diana; his eventual reunion with his true love, Camilla; and his relationships with William, Kate, Harry, and his grandchildren.

Ranging from his glamorous palaces to his country homes, from his globe-trotting travels to his local initiatives, Smith shows how Prince Charles possesses a fiercely independent spirit and yet has spent more than six decades waiting for his destined role, living a life dictated by protocols he often struggles to obey. With keen insight and the discovery of unexpected new details, Smith lays bare the contradictions of a man who is more complicated, tragic, and compelling than we knew, until now.

Praise for Prince Charles

“[Smith] understands the British upper classes and aristocracy (including the royals) very well indeed. . . . [She] makes many telling, shrewd points in pursuit of realigning the popular image of Prince Charles.”—William Boyd, The New York Times Book Review

“[A] masterly account.”—The Wall Street Journal

“Thoroughly researched and insightful . . . In this profile, it is clear [Smith] got inside the circular barriers that protect the man and his position. The Charles that emerges is, as the subtitle suggests, both a paradox and a creature of his passions.”—The Washington Times

“[A] compellingly juicy bio . . . Windsor-philes will be mesmerized.”—People

“Prince Charles paints an affectingly human portrait. . . . Smith writes about [Charles’s life] with a skill and sympathy she perfected in her 2012 biography of Charles’s mother.”—The Christian Science Monitor

“Comprehensive and admirably fair . . . Until his accession to the throne, Smith’s portrait will stand as the definitive study.”—Booklist (starred review)

“[A] fascinating book that is not just about a man who would be king, but also about the duties that come with privilege.”—Walter Isaacson

“Sally Bedell Smith has given us a complete and compelling portrait of the man in the shadow of the throne. It’s all here, from the back stairs of the palaces to the front pages of the tabs.”—Tom Brokaw

Comprehensive & Highly Readable
By L. M. Keefer
If you are looking for a comprehensive and sympathetic portrayal of Prince Charles, you may want to pick this book up. It doesn't attempt to camouflage Charles' flaws. And it chronicles Charles' strengths. For too long the Royal Family wasn't able to marry the people who might have been best suited for them such as a divorced person, a commoner, or a woman with a past. Thankfully, in part to Charles and Diana's disastrous marriage, that has changed for William and Harry.

My two primary take-aways from this book - and I've read all 600+ pages of it - regarding Charles is that self-pity may triumph over gratitude occasionally over his lot in life. Yes, he's been waiting 60 plus years to be King of England, but he has had extraordinary opportunities. To Charles' credit, he has made much of those opportunities in original ways. And that's the second take-away. I was amazed at the amount of endeavors he has been involved in to benefit others, and most of them have been successful except for when a staff member embezzles large amounts of money. Because Charles is involved in so many enterprises, the oversight has been lacking in a few instances. But the net gain is positive.

The enterprise which fascinates me as a designer is the community which Charles has been involved with: Poundbury. Poundbury is an experimental newly constructed town on the outskirts of Dorchester in the county of Dorset. The land is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. If you google images of it, it is charming. We need more Poundbury's in the world. It was inspired by Seaside, Florida.

You learn in this book that Charles has funded at-risk youth opportunities. One youth became a multi-millionaire entrepreneur. The actor Idris Elba also was schooled through Charles' programs. Some other interesting observations gleaned from this book:

* Charles kept asking Duchess Debo of Devonshire of Chatsworth for some art of Lucian Freud's until she gave in

* a PR initiative was undertaken to integrate Camilla into Charles' life publicly so that public opinion would finally approve of their marriage

* the experimental community in Scotland near Dumfries hasn't thrived as much as Poundbury due to the economy there

* Charles felt let-down when his parents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, only stayed 20 minutes to view Poundbury, one of his most successful projects

* Charles lays on the floor at Highgrove by an open window to listen to folks' comments upon visiting his beautiful garden

* William and Harry approach philanthropy as a team focusing on three main categories: conservation, mental health and the military. Their initiatives are much more short-term compared to Charles's.

* There is friction occasionally between Buckingham Palace and Charles' team

* Charles doesn't spend much time with Prince George - Charles is too busy

What you have to admire is that even though Charles was pretty much straight-jacketed into choices about his life by his parents - especially Prince Philip who is the opposite of his son and chose activities and experiences for Charles which would have suited Philip the best - Charles has eventually carved out a life which suits him. Some of Charles's melancholy is perhaps pent-up from a fairly miserable childhood about which he didn't have much affection or happy experiences. Gourdonstuon School sounds like torture which could have caused a mental breakdown in a less mentally sturdy individual. Charles stuffed most of his early misery, and it comes leaking out occasionally in some of his comments I think. Rejection or criticism now feels like the original pain of criticism in Charles' early life when Philip may have wanted Charles to be more like him kind of thing. Psychologists tell us that our subconscious doesn't distinguish between a hurt now and a hurt from an early life when we were more powerless, so we may respond as we would have liked to when we were a child and fairly defenseless.

The good news is that the Royal Family has learned from past mistakes, and William and Harry have benefited to live happier lives which suit their personalities and the 21st century. This book is highly readable, and didn't seem overly-long if you read a few chapters a night. It's not sensational, but it doesn't gloss over mistakes and read like a hagiography either. If you like Charles, or the Royal Family, you should enjoy it.

Much Told Tale, Overlong and Dull
By Eileen Pollock
If you know nothing about Charles and the British Royal Family, you will learn quite a bit from this book. That's because two-thirds is devoted to Charles's childhood, youth, and the Saga of Diana and Camilla. If you follow the royals, you know all this already. The last third was a detailed account, a never-ending account, of Charles's intended benevolent and innovative projects, their cost, his financing from billionaire friends (does a Prince of Wales have any other sort of friends?), and the small triumphs he gleans from his personal frugality (funneling his used bath water to water his plants) and generosity with other people's money. In return, the billionaires can casually drop the Prince of Wales's name to their friends in Texas. The grandiose projects seem to run into one another and you soon wish he had a few less grandiose plans. But he can finance those plans.

This is a man without a sense of proportion, with no sense of the value of a pound (dollar) and who never carries money. He has others to supply his needs.

Charles comes across as weak and insecure. His grand projects are to me a compensation for an inner sense of emptiness. So he fills his life with outer excitement, nonstop and compulsive.

One can't help but feel the author was intent on rehabilitating Camilla so she will be Crown-Ready when the time comes, and on stroking Charles's vanity. The author, too, like the billionaires, wants to say she is a close personal friend of the Prince of Wales.

the most beautiful princess, the dance with John Travolta
By carilynp
Sally Bedell Smith has done it again. Royal watchers, royal enthusiasts, royal wannabes, have your cup of tea ready and settle in for PRINCE CHARLES: THE PASSIONS AND PARADOXES OF AN IMPROBABLE LIFE. It is unfair to judge someone you don’t even know. In the past, I have done just that when it comes to Prince Charles. As a fan of Lady Di, and come on, who wasn’t, she was the loveliest, the fairytale crushed, the most beautiful princess, the dance with John Travolta, the mother who could have shoved off her children to nannies but she was so there, and when she toured minefields and visited with land mine victims and people with grave illnesses, she represented not only a true lady but a human with the utmost kindness. What else could we think of this man who divorced her who seemed so aloof. But then you read about how he grew up with nannies while his mother, the Queen, and his father left him for months on end while they traveled the world, rarely hugging the poor boy, sending him off to boarding school when he was just a child and he was so homesick. Poor, poor little Charles.

He did grow into his role and seemed to be quite interested in many things, so sporty and so charitable, but what did he love, what was he passionate about? Then there was Camilla. Forever Camilla. I judge again. But she married another man. Give it up. But he could not. They were both admitted cheaters. No excuses. Smith goes into detail about the Queen Mother, whom Charles adored and she him, the Queen, who formed quite a bond with her son and he still often refers to her as Mummy, and naturally Diana. And so much Camilla. You really get a sense of all of these women and what part they play in the Prince’s life. Fortunately, he seems to have a nice relationship with his sons. I’m not saying that I don’t like the guy. He clearly has a sensitive side and cared very much for many people in his life who played very important roles, who were both loyal to him and him to them, some who sadly have passed away. I enjoyed reading it very much and I highly commend Smith on the amount of research that clearly went into writing it. There is so much interesting information about the rich history about the royal family, those who were and are devoted to them. I can’t even imagine how long this must have taken her to assemble and write-. I just winced every time there was an unkind word said about Diana. I am not shooting the messenger, however, as I understand it’s like reading a history book. I put my full on trust in the author. I don’t want to Cliff Notes here. If you want to give me a pop quiz, I will gladly take it.

To Smith, I say, brilliant!

Tsugaru boogaloo
By Zendicant Pangolin
Osamu Dazai is an award winning author from turn-of-the-century Japan who lived a relatively short, somewhat tortured life before dying in a suicide pact with his mistress. Although he has a number of original works of literature to his name this book was commissioned as one number in a multi-volume gazetteer showcasing the various islands and areas of Japan. While I'm sure that the other numbers in this particular set were as dry as toast we are fortunate that Dazai uses this ostensible framework as a pretext to launch what is, in effect, an autobiographical novel.
The action takes place within a two week period of time in which the author leaves from his hovel in Tokyo on a walking and rail journey to visit the homes, towns, and friends of his childhood. Dazai places himself within the context of his native Tsugaru by exposing his various personality quirks to the reader and relating them to vestigial traits handed down to him by the aboriginal and immigrant bloodlines that comprise the populace of the region. He places himself within contemporary society by graciously and with sly humor, recreating the various meetings, drinking parties, meals and day trips that he shares with his friends and family who remain in his native land. Each new town, each new meeting places him further and further back into his past until one realizes that he is effectively regressing to infancy and the penultimate meeting with his very first nanny 'Take' who now lives in the farthest most remote corner of the province (his memory).
According to the extensive and elucidating introduction, Dazai always claimed this travelogue as a novel, and as such, one realizes that in staking out that territory Dazai effectively transforms a section of geographical map into the psychographic diary of an artist, an individual, and a cultural specimen. In Return to Tsugaru, Dazai exposes his soul to the gaze of the reader in literature equivalent of 3-D, for in it he expresses himself, his family, friends and His culture.

Dazai's little known travelogue; Mournful and Magical.
By Mr A ODonnell
Although this book is a lesser known work by the now-infamous Dazai it still has a lot to offer avid fans of his or those interested in Dazai's treatment of one of the more unknown corners of Japan. All of the familiar Dazai vices are here in abundance but are tempered by some interesting stories and recollections of both the writer's past and the things that he has seen come and go in the history of Tsugaru. If you expect an all-round introduction to Tsugaru and Aomori prefecture I'm sure there is better stuff elsewhere but if you are interested in a thoughtful account of Dazai's varied feelings about this area, then you're sure to enjoy it. He also quotes (extensively, in parts) from myths and stories from other writers that influence his recollections which pan out the sense of 're-discovery' that he is feeling. Again- this book has an intensely sad and mournful edge to it (which, in many ways- some would say is typical of Dazai's writing in general) Having said that- the writing still has a sense of beauty which seems, in its conclusion, to remain unnameable.

Powerful book
By Jonathan Anderson
I once had a chance to meet Mr Westerhoven (the translator) when I was an exchange student in Japan in the 1980's. He introduced me to Dazai and I never had a chance to properly thank him for it. (If you're reading this sir, you have my gratitude)

This is a powerful book and a fine translation. It isn't one of Dazai's better known works. I think of it as a lamp shone on his life which helps to explains his views on his home prefecture, his family, his politics and many other things. Dazai fans should read it simply because it sheds light on all his other writings.

Review
Ann Voskamp invites us to slow down, to learn how to live the full life of eucharisteo (with grace, thanksgiving, joy) regardless of circumstances. With lovely word pictures inspired by everyday life in her family and on her farm, she writes about her struggle to live joyfully amid sin and sorrow and suffering. (WORLD Magazine)

The basic idea is a good one, though not a new one
By BensMom
The basic idea is a good one, though not a new one. However, her tone is anything but joyous. This is more appropriate for grief counseling. I also agree that her metaphors/ similes are questionable with the last chapter being over the top. I won't rehash what other reviewers have said - it's there for you to read but, I did not feel this was appropriate for a church study.

The Message Gets Lost in the Words
By Books and Chocolate
I think this is one of those reviews that I'm going to take some heat over because I know this book and the author are very popular in Christian circles right now. That's why I wanted to read it myself, because I had heard so much about it.

First, the positive. I know several bloggers who are sharing their own 1000 gifts/gratitude lists and I'm always blessed to read them. I have kept my own accounting of what I call "grace notes" for years so I understand the blessing of looking for things to be thankful for. Voskamp shares from her heart with stories about her family and her own spiritual journey, and I think anyone reading this book would come away with a heightened sense of looking for God's grace in daily life whether it be having one's child come through surgery or the admiring the beauty of a full moon. I appreciate the encouragement to live life fully right where we are without feeling we need to work through a "bucket list" of daring experiences or exotic locations before we can be fulfilled.

But, this was a difficult book for me to read. Voscamp is obviously a poet at heart but the entire book is sing-songy with long descriptions and awkward word phrases and metaphors that I found distracting. It doesn't read as someone would actually talk in real life conversation.

As an example: "...tonight over our farm will rise the Great Hexagon of the blazing winter stars - Sirius, Rigel, ruby Aldebran, Capella, the fiery Gemini twins, and Procyon, and in the center, scarlet Betelgeuse, the red supergiant larger than twice the size of earth's orbit around the sun - and I will embrace the skin of a boy child that my body grew from a seed. The low heavens outside the paned windows fill with more snowflakes than stars, no two-stacked crystals the same; the trees in the wood draw in collective green breath to the still of January hibernation, and God in the world with birth ice from His womb, frost of heaven, bind the chains of the Pleiades, loose the cords of Orion, and number again the strands on my head."

Those who like this kind of poetic narrative with mystical undertones will enjoy this book. Those who don't will likely struggle to find the message in the sea of words. For me, it was just too much page after page, and it took me a while to finish the book because I had to take it in small doses.

I was also wary of the mystical/contemplative spirituality/emergent church references, as she references those known to be mystics, panentheists, universalists, or New Age authors such as Brother Lawrence, Henri Nouwen, Annie Dillard, Brennan Manning, Sarah Ban Breathnach, Teresa of Avila, and Dallas Willard, among others. The influence of the teachings of these various authors is apparent in Voskamp's writing.

In addition, I was uncomfortable with the chapter on making love to Jesus in which the author speaks of seeking communion with God in what can only be termed as sexual language, taking it to a level that I personally don't believe scripture intends. Voskamp writes, "Mystical union. This, the highest degree of importance. God as Husband in sacred wedlock, bound together, body and soul, fed by His body, quenched by His blood . . . God, He has blessed - caressed. I could bless God - caress with thanks. It's our making love. God makes love with grace upon grace, every moment a making of His love for us. . . . couldn't I make love to God, making every moment love for Him? To know Him the way Adam knew Eve. Spirit skin to spirit skin. . . The intercourse of soul with God is the very climax of joy . . . To enter into Christ and Christ enter into us - to cohabit."

Scripture doesn't teach that our relationship with God is to be a sexual, orgasmic experience or that we are to know him the way Adam as husband knew Eve as his wife. Further, what are children and men supposed to do with the notion of making love to Jesus?

Despite the doctrinal and personal issues with this book, I tried to stay focused on what I felt the author's intended message of the book was: live fully and abundantly in daily life by being thankful for the gifts that come from God's grace, no matter how small. I am inspired to live more fully in this kind of gratitude.

This review is simply my opinion of what was actually in the book and not a reflection on the author herself, whom I do not know personally. Her writing style just doesn't appeal to me and I have to question some of the "theology" in the book which is why I recommend discernment when reading it.

Not All That I'd Hoped
By Katie Mansfield
I started this book last summer. I was riveted by the first chapter and could relate to her experience growing up in a family whose faith in God died at the onset of tragedy. I'd hope to throw back a curtain of sadness in my life because of the death of my mother when I was a child. I thought finally a Christian author that I could relate to. I didn't feel like her listing of 1000 gifts was formulaic. 'I will do this so that I can get that" type of books don't work for me. Instead I felt that she was on an authentic journey in which she herself didn't know the outcome.
I read the second chapter and had questions but decided I needed to take my time and absorb what she was writing. The subsequent chapters didn't do anything for me. I found myself wondering what on earth she was talking about. Especially after she quit making her list. I'd heard so many people raving about this book that I wondered what my problem was. I don't get her floaty, lyrical style of writing. Some of the things she said made it feel like she were living and writing in a different century.
I finished the book hoping that there would be a conclusion to her story and that it would all be wrapped up. Instead the last chapter was strange.
I've popped in to read her blog and get the impression that what she has to say could be said in a more concise manner.
I think there is a lot of value in making a list of gifts and I will do that. Apart from that, I do not get the hype.
